After Walter and Mamie married they moved to Cleveland, Ohio so he could work in the steel mills there, which he did for a period of time.

In his lifetime he held jobs with a carnival, worked as a shoemaker, ran a restaurant on Rivermont Avenue and a beer joint called the Boxwood Inn on US 29, Lynchburg, Virginia. Located next to the entrance to Airport Road. He finally became a plumber and worked at this trade till he retired.

The first restaurant he ran was called Rock Tavern located just a few miles outside the city limits of Lynchburg on US Route 460 where the KOA campgrounds use to be. This time period was during World War II.

The story is told by his daughter, Eula who was there at the time, "A man was there drinking more than a few beers and asked Walter, "Why ain't you in the service?" His answer was that he was to old and couldn't join. The answer obviously didn't suit the man and he started yelling and cussing Walter and they started fighting. Eula said it was just like something you would see in the movies.
