One story about "Buddy" is told by his sister, Eula as follows: A group of his friends went down to the recruiting office in Lynchburg to join the Navy and he went with them. The recruiter gave him a permission form to be signed by his parents as he was under eighteen years old (Actually 14 but big and looked older). He took the paper to a "wino" barber on Main Street in Lynchburg and asked him to sign his fathers name to it. The barber agreeded but charged Buddy 50 cent to do it. That's how he wound up in the Navy during World War II! During this time he served onboad the USS Iowa, a battleship.
