Carl graduated from E.C. Glass High School in Lynchburg, Virginia in 1934. Worked in C.C.C. Camps for two years, US Navy for two years during World War II, a full fashion knitter at the Lynchburg Hosiery Mill and the Lynchburg Post Office as a Clerk.

He retired after 34 years at the Post Office on 29 July 1983 at the age of 68. During his retirment he wrote several books. One, "The Good Old Days" are stories about his life, family and relitives.
