BURWELL MASON

Died: 22 October 1859

Following information was obtained from Pension and Land Claims on file under W.C.
9063.

1) Fought in The War with Great Britain (War of 1812)

2) Born in Campbell County, Virginia, 6 October 1791.

3) Enlisted 14 September 1812 and served as a private in Captain James Meek's
Company, Virginia Milita and discharged, 10 March 1814.

4) Enlisted 1 September 1812 in Richmond, Virginia; served as a private in Captain
Barksdale's Company, Virginia militia and discharged 14 December 1814. At the time of
his enlistment he was 5' 10" tall,sandy hair and blue eyes.

5) 31 October 1850, a resident of Campbell County, age 59, he applied for bounty land
which he was due under the Act of 28 September 1850 on account of his part in the War of
1812.

6) He was granted bounty land for one-hundred and sixty acres, Warrent #15765.

Bounty Land Claim: Dated 31 October 1850.
Private with Captain James Meeks in the 5th Regiment of Virginia Milita, commanded by Col. Frances Preston. Voluntered at James Hurt's muster ground, in September 1813 for a term of six months.

Bounty Land Claim: Dated 21st day of March 1851. Burwell appeared before a Justice of the Peace and declared that he was a private with Captain Barksdale's Virginia Regiment, commanded by Col. William Morton and that he substituted at Richmond in place of J. Mason, September 1814 for the term of three months. Discharged at Elliot's Mill, 18th day of December 1814.

From papers found with Bounty Land Claim papers: Burwell served with Captain William Cook's, Virginia Militia from 30 August to 19 September 1914.

Bounty Land Claim: Dated 15 June 1853
Private in the Calvary Company of Captain William Cook, Virginia Militia. Voluntered at Read's Store in Campbell County on 20 August 1814 for six months. Discharged at Bottom's Bridge on 20 September 1814. Actual service was for twenty-one days.
