The Man Who Changed Music

DAVID SANBORN

Saxophonist David Sanborn began his musical career as a teen-age
sideman, playing on the burgeoning jazz and R&B club
circuit in his native St. Louis. A student of music at both
Northwester University and the University of Iowa, Sanborn joined the
influential Paul Butterfield Blues Band in 1967. He remained with the
group for four years, performing on the acclaimed
In My Own Dream album.

Sanborn subsequently worked on stage and in the studio with a variety
of established artists including Paul Simon, the Eagles,
Bruce Springsteen, Pink Floyd's Roger Waters and the Rolling Stones.
He spent two years as part of Stevie Wonder's band
(performing on the celebrated Talking Book LP) and played on David Bowie's
innovative 1975 release, Young Americans.

1975 was also the year Sanborn recorded his first solo album Taking Off.
It was followed by Sanborn, Promise Me The Moon and Heart To Heart.
In January 1980 he released his breakthrough LP, Hideaway, which remained
for over a year on both the Urban Contemporary and Jazz charts. Hideaway
also earned Sanborn a Grammy nomination for Best R&B Instrumental Performance.
Two more albums, Voyeur (1981) and As We Speak (1982) consolidated his standing
as one of modern music's premier instrumentalists.

In early 1983, Sanborn traveled to Italy to score the soundtrack to the film
"Stelle Sulla Citta" ("Stars Above The City"). The Italian production also
featured Sanborn in his first-ever acting role. Returning to America in the fall,
he entered the studio to begin work on his eighth album.

Backstreet, released in October, 1983 was produced by Ray Bardani,
Michael Colina and Marcus Miller. Miller, a renowned bassist, performs and
sings on Backstreet and contributes the cut "Believer." "A Tear For Crystal"
and "Blue Beach" were co-written by Marcus Miller and David Sanborn. Sanborn
composed both his album's title cut and the track "When You Smile
At Me." Guitarist Hiram Bullock, who also guests on the Backstreet sessions,
co-wrote "I Told You So." A major hit among
contemporary jazz fans, Backstreet remained at the top of jazz charts a
full year after its release.
