I was surprised and pleased to find mention of my step gramdmother's first husband, Richard Davis. My nephew was named Richard Lorenzo after him. In doing some genealogy research I had sought information about him in order to find out how, when and where my grandfather, Joseph Watson and Davis' widow, Mary met and married. Everything you mentioned fit, including the two daughters of Richard and Mary who were my aunts. I would like to know what your sources are so I might read them and continue my research. I am seeking information on my grandfather, Joseph Watson, who I was told was also a union organizer. Joseph was a miner from Lawrence County, OH and after the deat of his wife (1908)he was left with three small children. He subsequently married Mrs. Davis @ 1910 and they moved to Columbus and @1919 to Cleveland. Your page has given me new areas to look into. Thank you. Rachel Fair

My mother's family was from Glouster, Ohio. She was born and raised there, until she was a teenager, when she moved to Xenia, Ohio. My Great Uncle Boyd Medkiff was a resident of Rendville for many years and is buried in the cemetary on Rendville Hill. MY ncle George Johnson was a resident of Corning and Rendville for most of his adult life. He was a coal miner and worked and retired from the Peabody Mines. He died in 1986 and is buried in Corning Cemetary. I remember as a child many trips to Rendville and I was always fascinated by the frontier look of the town. This was in the fifties and sixties. I remember the saloons and the teen dancehall very well, and I have very fond memories of both Rendville and Corning. Thank you for sharing this information. Sincerely, Barbara S. Bruce

I believe this is a well written piece on the 8th Virginia Cavalry, C.S.A. I am a member of the Sons of Confederate Veterans – Norfolk County Grays, and I am proud to be a descendant of one of the men that served in the 8th Virginia Cavalry, C.S.A. – the outhern Army’s first unit to penetrate into the Yankee-State of Ohio. My name is Zane D. Perry, and I am the great-great-great grandson (3G) of Private Nathaniel Perry of the Sandy Rangers, Company K, 8th Virginia Cavalry, C.S.A. Nathaniel Perry enlisted in September 1861, along with his friend Prvt. Samuel Ferguson, and hi brother-in-laws (four of them) -- the Williamson brothers. Pvt. Nathan Perry served with men from the southern-Wayne County, Virginia area. Although Nathan's great-grandfather, John Perry (ca. 1720 - 1785) owned slaves in Bertie County, North Carolina an in Sumter County, South Carolina, and although Nathan's grandfather Abraham Perry (ca. 1740 - 1788) owned slaves in Bertie County, North Carolina, Nathan's father Arnold R. Perry (ca. 1784 – ca. 1860) of Wayne & Logan Counties of Virginia never owned sla es. Nathan Perry never owned slaves, either, Nathan believed in States' Rights, and he supported the Democratic ticket until his death on Perry Ridge in Wayne County, WV in 1905. Nathan Perry was born in September 1827 in Pike County, Kentucky. Nathan's father Arnold R. Perry had migrated in 1806 from the coast of North Carolina to the Levisa Fork of the Big Sandy River in Kentucky. Many of Nathan's nephews born in Kentucky became pro-Republican in their adult lives, and fought for the 45th Kentucky Mounted Infantry, U.S.A. against their uncle and other pro-south family members. Nathan Perry's neighbors of the 1860s in the steep hills and ridges dividing the East and West Forks of welvepole Creek in Wayne County, however, were strongly pro-Southern during the Civil War. Nathan Perry traveled and fought through Kentucky and Tennessee with his confederate neighbors of Wayne County and with Gen. A.G. Jenkins until Jenkins’ death at Cl yd’s Mountain. Private Nathaniel Perry was later part of the southern cavalry force fighting against Gen. Phillip Sheridan in the Shenandoah Valley, including Opequon Creek, and against General George A. Custer at Fisher’s Hill. While Private Perry’s deci ated unit camped outside of Harrisonburg, Virginia in December 1864 in the burned-out Shenandoah Valley, Private Nathaniel Perry and his confederate neighbors traveled across the many ridges of Virginia back to their homes in Wayne County, in a new State ormed by less-than-legal voting means – West Virginia. Private Nathaniel Perry’s remaining years were spent farming a ridge that had been granted to Nathan Perry by Governor Wise of Virginia in the 1850s. This Grant from the Commonwealth of Virginia is known to this day as Perry Ridge. Nathan built his log ca in on Perry Ridge during the Civil War while home on one of his furloughs from the 8th Virginia Cavalry, and the narrow slits in the cabin walls were purposely constructed to enable Nathan to defend himself against potential “Yankee Homeguard” attackers. Prior to Nathan’s enlistment, Captain Albert Gallatin Jenkins had led his troops in 1861 in the Battle of Scary, around the area of present-day Nitro, West Virginia. Jenkins’ victory at Scary, as well as other previous successes throughout this region, ca sed many pro-southern young men of Wayne County, Virginia in the fall of 1861 to enlist with Jenkins. Company K, also known as the “Sandy Rangers”, was also referred to as the “blood tubs”, because of the home-made red flannel shirts made by the wives of hat company’s men, which the men wore throughout the war. My grandfather, Andy K. Perry (one of Nathan Perry’s great grandsons) knew at least one of the battle songs sung by the 8th Virginia Cavalry, and it was called “I am a Rebel Soldier”. I hope this has helped give some personal insight on one of the men that helped form the 8th Virginia Cavalry, C.S.A. Sincerely, Zane D. Perry, Virginia Beach, Virginia

My aunt and uncle Jim and Myrtle Stone Jacobs operated s dairy farm just outside of Vinton, Ohio for many years. My mother Edna Stone King Woodruff and Williard Woodruff lived on a small farm outside of Vinton. Williard grew up there. I remember crossin the Silver Bridge from Pt. Pleasant, WV to Ohio when the tollbooth was still in operation. I remember the night that the bridge fell and the anxiety we experienced as we attempted to contact my mother. We knew that they crossed the bridge often. They t rned out to be safe, but my stepfather's niece's mother in law kand father in law perished in the river. They were from Porter which is a little town south of Vinton. I enjoyed many happy days on the little farm at Vinton and the Sundays that I attended the Methodist Church there.
