Verses (Poetry?)

This November Day   22 NOV 1991

It was here,
not too long ago it seems
that a trainload of war torn men came home, changed.
Changed through what seemed to be an eternity,
of fighting, gunfire, killing, and quiet,
waiting in what was most times hard kept patience.
All for a cause that had to be with us
at all times in order to have survived it all.
Even though I never remember really comprehending
the full meaning of that cause,
until the train pulled up to this very station that day,
and I saw all the women and children waiting for us,
many with tears in their eyes,
all happy to see us come back;
however,
How many others were at home,
knowing their loved one wasn't coming home?

All too many
considering they were fighting for the just side,
for what WE ALL knew was right.
They gave everything;
they gave their lives
to give us what we have today,
Freedom, and the right to keep what we already had.
The least I can do is remember them,
not only in my mind,
but in my heart.
As we all should, and some do.

That is why I have brought my grand daughter here,
here to this old train station
so that she may partake in the spirit of this November day,
the spirit alive within me,
and those who never came back.
