Today I Stand Proud   05 NOV 1992

Significant,
today is for me.
Years ago
I was young,
full of life.
It was said to be an adventure,
the chance of a lifetime.
We would leave and comeback.
However, few did,
and those of us who returned
weren't the exuberant, energetic
youths that had left.
The great adventure had gone sour
and the weeks had turned into months.
We had been forced into men,
men that didn't think twice about
shedding a tear.
Today I look out,
I see, I hear.
Much of it about slightly more recent times,
all the contributors thereof I commend,
as it would seem
they knew more of
the shock awaiting them overseas,
yet, still they went, thank GOD.
But as I look out every year,
I wonder,
Where are the men of my generation?
Yes, there are some,
but their voices, I notice
are growing weak...
Am I,
Are we,
slowly being forgotten,
along with what we did
and why we did it?
I fear the answer,
because if so,
then will the same fate come
to those who
were in the second?
So much was given--
that I know by the tears
at the playing of that familiar tune.
I know I can stand tall.
Today isn't about me,
It's about what I did,
others did,
and why did it.
Why many died for it.
