Generation No. 1

1. David1 Leister was born Abt 1741 in England or Ireland, and died November 06, 1830 in Greenville County, SC. He married Elizabeth Ritchey Abt 1770 in Cumberland County, Pennsylvania, daughter of Adam Ritchey and Agness Bolton.

Notes

Leonardo Andrea, a columnist in a local newspaper, stated in an article dated March 23, 1966, that the correct spelling of the name was originally Leicester and that it was first an English surname. According to the article, Leicester became Leister when the family arrived in America, then some dropped the "i" and became Lesters; others would drop the "e" and became Listers. There are also some indications that some descendants adopted the spelling Leaster.

According to the Paoli records, David Lister was born about 1741. One report says that he came to America from England with his brother Robert, and that they landed in the Virginia area. Another says that the Listers came from Ireland in the early 1700s, and that many of the Lister children were born in Virginia. Regardless, David must have very shortly moved to Cumberland County, Pennsylvania since during the 1770's, in Pennsylvania, he married Elizabeth Ritchey (or Ritchie).

David Lister, son-in-law of Adam Ritchey, was a Revolutionary War soldier. He served in Capt. Samuel Irwin's Company, First Bn., Cumberland County Militia; this was Colonel Ephraim Blain's Regiment. A Muster Roll of that company, dated January 7, 1777, in or near Philadelphia, shows the name "David Leister" along with his brothers-in-law Edward O'Hail and John Ritchey. It is believed that he and others of his family came to the South Carolina area following the Revolutionary War.

There is some mention in some records (Lorene B. Fisher) of a son named Henry Hanson, but information concern-ing this son, if, indeed there was one by this name, is very scarce. Another report says that there was a son named David, but, to date, no information about him has been found either.

Children of David Leister and Elizabeth Ritchey are:

2 i. William2 Leister, born Abt 1773.

+ 3 ii. Adam Ritchey Leister, born Abt 1775 in Cumberland County, Pennsylvania; died 1840-1850 in Transylvania Co., NC.

Generation No. 2

3. Adam Ritchey2 Leister (David1) was born Abt 1775 in Cumberland County, Pennsylvania, and died 1840-1850 in Transylvania Co., NC. He married Ester Mahaffey Abt 1798.

Notes

From Noel L. Brunson's Lanford/Lister Connection---Adam became a doctor.

It is believed that there was a son named George Washing-ton Lister, date of birth not yet learned. It is believed that he was also a medical doctor.

The Paoli information indicates that there might have been four other males and one female, names not yet learned, who may have been born during the period 1804 through 1810. A very great amount of uncertainty is present here.

Children of Adam Leister and Ester Mahaffey are:

5. Moses2 Leister (David1) was born Abt 1784 in Cumberland County, Pennsylvania, and died 1831 in St. Clair Co., Alabama. He married Fanny Brown.

Notes

One report relates that Moses accompanied his brother James to St. Clair County, Alabama, and appeared on the 1830 Census for that County. According to this report, Moses died in that County about 1831, leaving a widow Frances (Fanny?), sons Theodore, Sidney and Alfred (or Alford), and daughters Mary E. (Eliza?) and Julia.

8. Thomas Hale2 Leister (David1) was born December 08, 1792 in Greenville County, SC, and died August 1873 in Shelby Co., Texas. He married Frances Sterrett.

Notes

Apparently, he is the one referred to in David Lister's Will, in connection with the negro girl Kisiah (see Appendix 1 Lanford/Lister Connection).

He lived in South Carolina, Tennessee and Texas. One report says that he was a Judge in Texas, appointed by Sam Houston. There is among the Paoli materials a copy of a picture of an old log house, said to have been built in or about 1831, between Shelbyville and San Augustine, in Shelby County (Texas), by Judge Thomas H. Lister. An article concerning this house appeared in the Rotogra-vure Magazine in 1936. It was a three-story house and it served as the unofficial headquarters of the Moderator-Regulator War during the early and mid-1840s, when Shelby County was almost under siege. Sam Houston was called to settle the fiery dispute. It is said that Sam Houston often came to the house for dances and to talk politics.

Notes

FROM LANFORD-LISTER CONNECTION BY NOEL L. BRUNSON

According to Dr. Howard's book, Simon was a medical doctor and became very wealthy, owning about 1500 acres on both side of Middle Tyger. According to one report in the family, he owned a number of slaves and his daughter Margaret seemed to be accustomed to a high living standard. The Simon A. Lister property was in the Gowens-ville area and Lister Road is probably located near where the old home place was (see Note on Lanford and Lister Places, Appendix 7).

Simon's Will was dated Nov. 15, 1866 and was probated on Dec. 7, 1866, so he must have died between those dates. (See Copy of Will of Dr. Simon A. Lister, Appendix 6.) He mentioned his children as follows: Moses H. Lister; Mary C. Wingo; Carter C. Lister; Rosalinda Morrow; Manurva Ann Lister Morrow, Jane Elizabeth Lister Henson, David C. Lister, and Margaret P. Lanford. The Family Bible was given to Jane E. Henson. Certain land was to be sold with the proceeds to be used to keep up their graves in the cemetery and to build a stone wall around them. Moses and David, along with Rev. T. J. Earle, were to be Executors. The Will was witnessed by G. R. Ponder, John Barnett and Melinda Brooks. The Estate was in adminis-tration until April 14, 1877, when the Executors were discharged. Family tradition is to the effect that he was buried in the Lister Family Cemetery, and there is some evidence of this, but certainty is lacking (see the Note Concerning Lister Family Cemetery, Appendix 5).

Notes

Ken Ferguson reports that, included in a Lister file at The South Caroliana Library in Columbia is a collection of 37 pieces, consisting primarily of letters between A. H. Lister and his wife Mary (see Chapter 20, Lanford/Lister Connection); however, along with those letters is an envelope on which the following words are written: "By the hand of Moses Lister". It is not clear what is meant by these words; perhaps Moses delivered these letters, or a part of them, to someone.

Notes

(Note: Mary's middle name and/or initial is not free from doubt; Dr. Lister's Will is susceptible of the interpretation of "C", "P" and "R". Another source [the Ancestor Chart mentioned below] gives her middle name as "Elizabeth". The "C" is followed here because that is the initial on her grave at Inman First; however, Shirley Wagstaff reports that she saw the name "Mary Elizabeth" in a Bible record she saw in the home of her uncle, Jack Wolfe.)
