Alfred was admitted to the Benevolent Society with his sister Margaret (Alice) on 9 February 1878 as abandoned children, he was 7 years old and his mother was in Darlinghurst goal and father had abandoned the children.

On 31 January 1879 Alfred was transferred from the Benevolent Society to the Randwick Childrenšs Asylum aged 7 (he would have been 8).

Alfred was discharged from the Randwick Asylum on 22 September 1883 aged 12 and apprenticed to William Fleming of South Fr(can't read the writing).

Family memory has it that Alfred lived in a cave near one of the Sydney beaches, possibly Manly or Balmoral. He is also believed to have gone to the First World War where he lost a leg.

Alfred died in 1940 aged 70.
