It is a difficult thing, being the "runt" of one's clan. I should know; for a giant, I am quite puny. My early days were a never-ending stream of insults, taunts, and tribulations hurled my way for my diminutive stature. I likely would not have survived, but for my wits. Yes, gentle reader, giants can have wits. If I am weak for my kind, I am also quite bright. To be sure, there are elvish sages who make me look foolish, but I can more than hold my own in discussion or debate with most kindred.
Not surprisingly, given my poor standing among my clan, I took to spending the majority of my time alone. I was given to long walks in the mountains. One day, much to my surprise, I met a wandering human. Much to his surprise, I did not attempt to eat him. Eager for company, I approached him in the spirit of friendship. To my relief and surprise, he returned it. We spoke. He was a mage. From that meeting, all else arose; he discovered in me talent for the arcane. After I learned to harness the power of the lightning (and what giant, living among the clouds, has not looked on the lightning with fear, envy, and primeval longing?) I was never again the object of scorn among my own kind.
Still, that kindly magician awakened in me a desire to see all there was to see and to learn of the wide world. I entered the world of men. I gave up the name bestowed upon me by my sire (and greatly amused was I to learn it was a name of power and evil spun by the greatest of your tale-weavers, Professor Tolkien! Imagine -- Grond, weak and effeminately bookish giant is named for the feared Hammer of the Underworld!) and took the commonplace human name of Thaddeus. Despite their prejudices and fears, I learned. When Lady Ardinay announced another crusade to a distant place, I joined. Unlike most of my brethren, when she had her change of heart and told us no longer to war on the inhabitants of "Earth," I listened. I was glad; despite the reputation of giants, we do not come easily to slaughter and pillage and I had been troubled.
Since that time, I have learned a great deal, both about magic, and about myself. I discovered I am one of the rare few who can function in "foreign realities." I have met many strange people, and I name some of them friends. I have gained in my art, and therewith goes a great tale. I do not understand all of it, but with some of my friends, we aided a man as old as some of the most venerable elvish sages recover an artifact called "The Holy Grail." We ultimately fought a warlock from the nation of France, given over to the reality called "the CyberPapacy." We were victorious, but not before the fiend withered my arm to uselessness with his corrupt magic. Our human leader - I shall not name him to protect his 700-year-old secret - recovered the Grail and used it to heal me. Such wonders it showed to me! The grimoire I recovered, with all its puissant spells, is naught before the might and majesty of the god, no, the God, revealed to me in that moment of healing and cleansing.
So. I grow in my art, I protect my friends, and I do what I can to aid the plight of this innocent world, this "Core Earth." My services are in great demand in the place called Japan. Who among them would think that one of my bulk and strength (even an undersized giant is a titan among humans) could wield "supernatural" powers? If only they made "laptop computers" with larger keyboards . . ..
