What is Homeopathy?

Homeopathy is a holistic system of medicine that safely and effectively treats everyday ailments as well as acute and chronic symptoms of mind and body by stimulating the body's own self-healing abilities

The Homeopathic system of medicine is over 200 years old and was founded by a German physician, Dr. Samuel Hahnemann. Homeopathy is based on “The Law of Similars”- this means that a remedy that produces symptoms in a healthy person will cure those same symptoms when manifested by a person in a diseased state.

Where do Homeopathic remedies come from?

Homeopathic remedies are derived from natural substances that come from plants, minerals,  animals  as well as Nosodes (diseased tissue). Some commonly used and well known Homeopathic remedies derived from :

The plant sources are Allium cepa from the onion , Belladonna from the deadly nightshade plant, Arnica montana  from the leopard’s bane plant  and Chamomila from the Matricaria Chamomile.

The animal sources are Apis mellifica from the Honey bee ,  Sepia from the Cuttle fish and Lachesis from the Surukuku snake poison.

The mineral sources are  the elements like Sulphur ,Graphites,  Aurum met    (Gold), Argentum met( Silver) ,Silica,   Calcarea carb from the Oyster shell and  Nat mur from common salt.

From Nosodes are Psorinum, Tubercullinum, Medhorhinum and  Syphillinum.

How are Homeopathic remedies prepared?

The process by which homeopathic potencies are prepared is called Potentisation. A remedy is prepared by diluting the substance in a series of steps. Liquid substances are made potent by Succussion and solid substances by trituration. The two common systems used to prepare the homeopathic potencies are the decimal (X ) and the centesimal ( C ) scale.

The first step is preparation of Mother Tincture/Mother Triturate from the crude raw material. In the preparation of decimal potency, the first potency designated as 1X will contain one part mother tincture/triturate of raw material and 9 parts of vehicle, which is usually alcohol/sugar of  milk. The Second potency 2X will contain 9 parts of vehicle and 1 part of 1X potency; third potency 3X will accordingly have 9 parts of vehicle and one part of 2X potency, and so on and so forth.

Similarly, in the preparation of the Centesimal potency, first potency designated as 1C potency contains one part of crude substance and 99 parts of alcohol/sugar, and consequently the next potencies will contain one part of previous potency and 99 parts of alcohol/sugar of  milk

Homeopathic remedies are so highly diluted that not a single molecule of the original natural substance remains in the prepared remedy. Remedies are available in liquid, pellet, and tablet forms. The most common potencies available are 6X, 12X, 6C, 12C, 30C.

How should Homeopathic medicines be stored?

Homeopathic remedies retain their therapeutic effectiveness indefinitely when stored in  tightly shut glass bottles, in a dry cool place, out of direct sunlight and  away from strong odors.

They must be kept out of reach of young children. The remedies are not poisonous regardless of the quantity consumed but a child may develop symptoms of the remedy consumed. Contact your Homeopathic physician immediately if your child accidentally consumes too many pills of the homeopathic remedy. Any ill-effects  are usually very mild and can be easily antidoted.

Are Homeopathic medicines safe?

Homeopathic medicines are safe ,inexpensive, nontoxic and they work. They can be administered  to babies, pregnant women as well as the elderly .There are no side effects when the carefully chosen remedy is administered in the right potency and  dosage under the supervision of a qualified Homeopath.

What is the Right Potency and Right Dosage?

Your Homeopathic Physician will be able to guide you to the right remedy and right dosage. In general Chronic diseases are treated with infrequent repetitions of high potency of the deep-acting constitutional remedy while the acute conditions are treated with frequent repetitions of low potencies. The more diluted a potency the higher its is considered to be. An individual’s sensitivity also plays an important role in the selection of remedy and potency.

How are Homeopathic medicines different from allopathic medicines?

Man has used plants and  herbs to fight illnesses through the ages.

Allopathy or modern medicine is based on the principle of administering chemical substances that  produce the opposite effects of the symptoms of the disease. Allopathic medicines work against the body and only provide symptomatic relief. For example acidity & heartburn are treated with anta-acids, pain and fever is treated with anti-inflammatory drugs, allergies are treated with antihistamines and constipation is treated with laxatives. If all else fails Steroids are used. Allopathic medicine is indispensable in emergencies and surgical medicine.

Homeopathic medicines work with the body’s own healing mechanisms. Homeopathic remedies act as powerful stimuli when administered in tiny doses to the body’s own healing capacity  correcting  the imbalances and weaknesses that caused the body to fall prey to the disease  to begin with. So ,for example instead of having to depend on the anta-acids or laxatives for daily symptomatic relief the  carefully selected Homeopathic remedy addresses and corrects the root cause of the acidity/constipation .

How should homeopathic medicines be administered?

Homeopathic medicines are best taken by mouth. They should be taken on a clean mouth. Any food or drink should be avoided for at least fifteen minutes before and after taking the homeopathic remedy. It is alright to drink water before you take the remedy but avoid even water for 15 minutes after the remedy.  It is recommended that a gap be increased to half an hour before and after the remedy if tea, coffee, alcohol, mint, garlic ,onion ,cigarettes or any other strong substances are consumed. Remedies will not be absorbed  if your mouth tastes of toothpaste, tobacco, strongly flavored sweets, or spicy food, Rinse out  the mouth thoroughly with  water   before a remedy is administered.

Do I Need stop taking my prescription medicine while on homeopathic treatment ?

You must continue to see your  regular physician to get a proper medical diagnosis for your symptoms. If you are on regular medications for asthma  diabetes, hyper-tension, hypothyroid, high cholesterol or any other condition, continue to take them regularly. If blood tests taken while on the Homeopathic treatment show that you no longer the allopathic drugs , they can be slowly tapered off under  the mutual  guidance and consultation   with both your homeopathic  and allopathic physician .Never stop taking  any prescription medicines without consulting your regular doctor Most allopathic drugs do not interfere with Homeopathic treatment.Steroids and Antibiotics are to be used with caution. Please inform your Homeopath  of all allopathic drugs that you are taking or  will be taking.
