Lebanon Church cemetery in Russell Co. [Ala.] that has had written in the concrete "Lou Sallas" (she was called Lou). I think that is her grave but am not sure and cannot find an obituary for her."

George was a grocer (or merchant). It seems he invested in the Coke-A-Cola Co. in it's early days and made a small fortune. He bought lots of land in Russell County. When he died in 1927 his estate all went ot his wife Emma. (They did not have any children.) She could not sell anything but was to live off the interest, etc., of the investments. At her death it was all to be sold and divided between his nieces and nephews and her nieces and nephews. By the time she died in 1958, all of Emma's nieces and nephews had built homes on land Emma owned. She couldn't sell the land but the will didn't say she couldn't rent it out and she did - for $1 a year for 99 years. His nieces and nephews sued but the court ruled that the rentals were legal and that was that. George's nieces and nephews received $1,000 each.George married Emma Lee Thomas daughter of James Berry grove Thomas and Cordelia Day on 27 Apr 1887 in Russell Co., Alabama. He was at Petersburg, Virginia and was discharged in April 1865. He was paroled on May 1, 1865 at Greensboro, North Carolina. When he was 73 years old he applied for "the relief of Confederate Soldiers and Sailors" stating that he was "now unable to make a living by manual labor on account of age and affliction." The application gave his net worth as $10. His address was given as Hayman, Alabama. His application for a pension was granted.
In 1880, he was living in Beat 8 (Estaboga) in Talladega Co., Ala. When the 1900 census was taken they were living in the home of their son Robert, in Coffee Co., Alabama. John's occupation at that time was listed as "chairmaker." So far I have not found him listed on any census in 1910. In 1920, John Silas, a 94 year old widower, is listed with his daughter Sarah Griffith and her husband Franklin A. Griffith in Township 1, Precinct 16, in Geneva Co., Alabama.
