A New Dawn

Prelogue: The Morning Sun

Dia opened her eyes and gazed into the murky darkness of her room. She stretched and sat up in her bed, drinking in the complete silence with pleasure. She loved being the first one awake. It was like she had the entire world to herself, and Dia relished the solitude.

She got up out of bed and into the shower. The hot water invigorated her senses, and she now felt fully awake. She dried off with one of her monogrammed bath towels and got dressed in her school uniform before going into the kitchen to fix herself breakfast.

Dia sat down at her breakfast room table to eat and watch the sunrise. She examined her english muffin with interest. She had fixed her mother one with canadian bacon, but hers only had raspberry jam. She was a vegetarian. Dia felt that not eating meat was a sign of intelligence; after all, Albert Einstein, her hero, had been a vegetarian. She had given up trying to convert her mother, however.

Just as Dia was thinking of her, Mrs. Shelly came into the room, tucked her breakfast in her lab coat pocket, and kissed her daughter good-bye.

"Work hard on your report, sweetheart," she called on her way out the door.

Ah, yes, my report, Dia thought as she sipped her tea. Her history teacher had assigned her class term papers the day before, and she had chosen pre-Nega War religion, a topic she found facinationg in its primitiveness and total lack of scientific basis. She needed to start researching it today.

Dia finished her breakfast and went back to her room to get her satchel and make sure her appearance was decent. She ran a brush through her short blonde hair a few times, grabbed her lunch off the kitchen counter, and then headed for school, locking the appartment door behind her. The morning sun felt good on her face as she walked down the sidewalk. There is something special about today, Dia thought. It just feels like something important is going to happen.

Just as she was approaching her high school she heard a soft mew behind her. She turned to see a black cat with an unusual, crescent-shaped spot on her forehead sitting on ground and looking up at her plaintively.

"Hey, kitty," Dia cooed, crouching down to scratch the cat's head. "Are you lost?" The cat purred and brushed up against her.

"Well, I'd like to stay and pet you, but I have to get to school." She stroked the cat a few times and then trotted up the steps into the school.

If she had turned around, Dia might have noticed the cat staring after her with a knowing expression in its eyes.

"It's definitely her," the cat said to itself. "Honestly, Luna, I don't know if you're up to doing this all over again."
