Note: Although the first championship for girls was held in 1980, girls were allowed to run on boys teams before that. In 1979, girls ran in the conference "B" race. The fastest girl that year was East Mecklenburg's Joan Nesbit, who finished 14th with a time of 19:58.5 for 3 Miles. Nesbit would later run and coach at the University of North Carolina and represent the United States at the 1996 Olympics, the World Cross Country Championships and various other races representing the U.S.
*** 1978 was the first year girls were allowed to run on boys teams, but no records are
available to find out how they ran in the conference "B" race that year.

Divisions were used for several years, but conference championships were held after the divisional championships, except for these two years.
--- From 1978 to present all Southwestern 4A conference championships have been run at
McAlpine Greenway Park. The 1978 and 1979 races were run on a 3 Mile course, not the current 3.1 course that is currently used. Since 1980, the course distance has been 3.1 miles and has been run on the same course.
