Down The Rabbit Hole

A BASSET'S QUARRY QUERY

The moon was full, round and bright,
Shining down with awesome light.
The sky pure black with stars in sight,
Twinkling with a wild delight.

A perfect night to run in spite
Of urges to recline.
To catch that game of rapid fame,
Tonight it would be mine.

I ran so swift, my nose it sniffed,
Ears wafting up the smell.
The scent so strong I felt my prey,
As pounding legs propel.

A mighty howl, a vicious growl,
The ground shook with my bark.
A baying, saying of my chase,
Through woods so deep and dark.

So close, so near, I sensed the fear,
I had the beast for sure.
Nothing could elude my track,
My pace but just a blur.

I had him in my sight I saw,
Then down the hole he flit.
The only way to a safe stay,
For one so tired rabbit.

We Bassets trail and will pursue,
Till every ounce is gone.
Unending drive to catch them live,
Or bark for joy alone.

The moon's still full but lower set,
The black night yet surrounds.
The stars shine down, a blinking frown,
Of prey, away to ground.

I move more slowly going home,
Walking, not a run.
And as I go, my thoughts flow,
Reliving all the fun.

A jaunty prance, a happy gait,
I proudly say, "So what!"
The chase was grand, across the land,
The victory won or not.

My paws slog 'cross the grassy ground,
And move me through the brush.
A tail held high, towards the sky,
In pride of chases such.

The cry now quieted within my soul
To split the night with speed.
My ears droop low, my tongue drips so,
To cool my panting need.

I climb the stairs onto the porch
And curl into a ball.
My eyes are closed, my tail reposed,
As rest invades my all.

The chase for naught, no rabbit caught,
Tonight the fun is done.
But then I ask, as I now bask,
What would I do with one?
