Clyde's Newer Music Picks

Newer Music Picks

This is a page reflecting my musical tastes of newer music. These are artists that have been around for like five years or less. In a few cases, they may have been around for longer than that, but for whatever reason, I have only liked them for a short time. This list is in no particular order other than when I thought of them. I like all of them equally well. :)

The Goo-Goo Dolls

I first heard The Goo-Goo Dolls with the release of "Name". But it was their latest album, Dizzy Up The Girl that has made me really fall in love with their music. The album has "Iris," "Slide," and "Black Balloon." The members of the band are John Rzeznik, Robby Takac, and Mike Malinin.

The Backstreet Boys

Right now, there is a slew of "boy bands." The Backstreet Boys are the only one of them that I like. I think these guys will survive for the long term whereas some of their clone bands will not. Time will prove me right or wrong. Their albums are Backstreet Boys and Millenium. The group members are A. J. McLean, Howie Dorough, Nick Carter, Kevin Richardson, and Brian Littrell.

Shania Twain

I first heard Shania Twain's "Any Man of Mine" on the radio in 1996. I was hooked. Mutt Lange (her husband) and she are a song-writing team to be reckoned with. I love her music. She is also a wonder because she breaks all the rules of country music and has made a success on her own terms. That's the way to do it. Her albums include Come On Over and The Woman In Me

Creed

I first caught a video, "My Own Prison," from Creed on MTV (novel concept, they were actually playing a music video) a little over a year ago. I loved it. Then I caught the band live at RockFest '98 in KC. So far, only one album, My Own Prison. But it is awesome and I can't wait for their next one. The band members are Scott Stapp, Mark Tremonti, Brian Marshall, and Scott Phillips.

Tim McGraw

I first heard Tim McGraw when he released "Indian Outlaw." I couldn't stand the song. Then his next album, All I Want was released. I was hooked. :) The song I like best is "It's Your Love." It's a duet with his wife, Faith Hill; I guess because it's about the kind of relationship that just about everyone is brought up expecting to find. Oh, well, guess one can dream about it anyways. The albums of his that I like are All I Want, Everywhere, and A Place in the Sun.

Trace Adkins

"This Ain't No Thinkin' Thing" rocked onto the radio and made me wanna dance. It was the first time I heard Trace Adkins and I loved both the song and the voice. I was really hooked when I saw the long blond hair. :) I think he will be around for a long time to come. His albums are Dreamin' Out Loud and Big Time.

Faith Hill

I heard Faith Hill's "Wild One" in 1993 and thought I knew exactly who she was singing about. (Not me, btw) She has yet to put out something that I haven't liked. She has undergone a lot of changes in the last few years. She is now married (to Tim McGraw) with two daughters. Her looks have also changed dramatically, guess she's the Madonna of country music in that respect. Her albums are Take me As I Am, It Matters To Me, and Faith.

Tal Bachman

I heard a song on the radio about a month ago (May, '99) called "She's So High." It took about a week to find out who the singer was. It was Tal Bachman and this was his first single. I bought his album for the song. It is awesome. :) Tal is the son of Randy Bachman of Guess Who and Bachman-Turner Overdrive fame.

Dru Hill

Of all places for me to first actually hear Dru Hill's music was a talk show, Rikki Lake no less. They were on the show to surprise some fans with a meeting and they sang acapella. I love anyone that can sing in great harmony like that. :) The group members are Jazz, Sisqo, Nokio and Woody. The band's albums are Dru Hill and Enter The Dru

Savage Garden

"I Want You" is a song that I first heard on the Rosie O'Donnell Show. She was in love with the song and so was I. But their second single, "To The Moon and Back," was what prompted me to buy the album, Savage Garden. The songs on the album encompass a wide variety of styles. I can't wait to see what the second album is like. The guys in the band are Daniel Jones and Darren Hayes.

Blessid Union of Souls

I loved Blessid Union of Souls's first single "Believe" from the very first time I heard it. I went out and bought it that day; the album wasn't even out yet. As soon as it was, it was on my music shelf and so will the next album. :) The band members are Eddi Hedges, Tony Clark, Jeff Pence, Elliot Sloan, and C. P. Roth. The group's albums are Home and Walking Off The Buzz.

Trans-Siberian Orchestra

I heard Trans-Siberian Orchestra on a Christmas show of Rosie O'Donnell's. The band was a fascinating blend of heavy metal and classical music. I had never heard anything like it and I absolutely loved it. There are many members in the differnt incarnations of this group. However, it is mainly the brainchild of Paul O'Neill, Bob Kinkel, Jon Oliva and Al Pitrelli. The albums by this group are Christmas Attic, Christmas Eve and Other Stories and the forthcoming Beethoven's Last Night .

The Black Crowes

Okay, the Black Crowes are not a new band and I loved their first album from like ten years ago (Shake Your Moneymaker). But I haven't like anything else from them until their latest album came out this spring. It is a return to their original sound. :) The albums to buy are Shake Your Moneymaker and By Your Side. The band members are Chris Robinson, Rich Robinson, Marc Ford, Johnny Colt, Steve Gorman, and Eddie Harsch.
