Biography

Beti Rozen is a Brazilian children's author from Rio de Janeiro who has lived in Israel, Mexico, and currently in the United States. She has published five books in Brazil, two in the United States and has had stories published in Israel, China and the former Czechoslovakia. Her books for children include: Robinho, o Robozinho e Outras Histórias--a collection of short stories including one about a robot who struggles with human feelings; Tancredo Neves: Gente Pra Gente Lembrar e Relembrar--a book about ex-Brazilian President Tancredo Neves for children.

Her book, O Coração Sem Dono no Pais das Trevas, is a bilingual children's edition in English and Portuguese about a heart that searches for an owner in a land where no one has a heart. This book became a best seller in the city of Recife in Brazil.

Other books by Ms. Rozen include Bolas de Sabão--a book of poems, and Diário de Uma Jovem em Israel about her life in Israel. She has been awarded four literary prizes for poetry in Rio de Janeiro and the United States. She is Vice President of the Union of Brazilian Writers in New York. In addition to working as a journalist for publications in New York, Miami, Boston, and Toronto, she also works with 4th, 5th, and 6th graders in New York City’s Creative Writing Program. She is a Portuguese teacher in New York City and works for Continental Airlines.

Her most recent book Stolen Spirit is about the arrival of a Portuguese explorer from the point of view of a Brazilian Indian boy. This book, co-written with Peter Hays, has now been adapted into a children’s play. A Brazilian edition of Stolen Spirit, called O Sonho do Guerreiro has published in the fall of 2001.
