SONIA SALES

BOOK

Biography

Born in Rio de Janeiro, Sonia Sales passed her childhood and adolescence in Niteroi. With formation in Psychology and Art, she accomplished several courses of cultural improvement, among them Oriental Philosophy, under Murilo Nunes de Azevedo at the PUC in Rio de Janeiro, Oriental Culture, under Francesca Cavalli, and Japanese Culture, under Lumi Toyoda, the two last in São Paulo, where she took root in 1981. Her deep admiration for Far Eastern Art and Civilization took her to study the archaeological ceramics and ancient porcelains of China, and for that same reason she began the learning of the Chinese language. She lived some time in Europe, taking extension courses in Munich and Brussels. Sonia began to write poems at 10, incentivated by her teacher of Portuguese language, Bittencourt da Silva, but her first book was published in 1996. She writes daily and produced hundreds of poems, many of them already published. Her familiarity with Poetry is also due to a long correspondence with Carlos Drummond de Andrade, who dedicated her two poems, and to a friendship with poets as Walmir Ayala, Wilson Rocha and Theon Spanudis, among others. Sonia has four books of poems published, and will be issuing now in 2000 a fifth. She is a correspondent member of four Academies: Carioca de Letras, Brasileira de Literatura, Niteroiense de Letras and Guanabarina de Letras. The poetry of Sonia Sales has been highly praised by many important personalities of the Brazilian and International literary scenery, such as Josué Montello, Hernani Donato, Veríssimo de Mello, Paulo Bonfim, Nelson Saldanha, Artur Benevides, Renato Jobim, Moacyr Félix, Neide Archanjo, José Hermano Saraiva (Portugal), Fernando Campos (Portugal), Joaquim Veríssimo Serrão (Portugal), Ruben Nuñes (Argentina), John W. Foster Dulles (United States of America), Joseph Rosenblatt (Canada) and many others.
