JOYCE CAVALCCANTE

BOOK
Biography

The writer Joyce Cavalccante is the creator and current president of REBRA , the Brazilian Women Writers' Net. She is also director of RELAT- the Latin America Women Writers' Net. Although she always felt greatly attracted to the quietness of her study, a nice place to write her longs novels during the small hours, she knows the great difficulties that Brazilian women writers have to go through, especially beginners, when trying to make themselves known and to have their talent recognized in an ever shrinking publishing market. To try finding solutions for these problems, she created the Brazilian Women Writers' Net, an association that will strive to help Brazilian women make their literary work well known throughout Brazil and the world.
Joyce Cavalccante was born in Fortaleza, Ceará and has lived in São Paulo for the last two decades. She's a journalist, novelist, storyteller, chronicler and lecturer. She has published seven fiction books and has taken part of eight short story anthologies with other fellow writers. She has systematically written in newspapers and magazines, publishing stories, articles and reviews and has made lectures about the Brazilian female literature in universities either abroad or at home.
She received, in 1979 and 1980, two consecutive prizes in the Erotic Story Contest organized by "Status Magazine", published by Editora Três, in São Paulo, with "ESTÓRIA DE UM CORPO DE MENINA" ("THE STORY OF A GIRL'S BODY") and "LUTA LIVRE" ("CATCH AS CATCH CAN"), respectively. In 1993, she received the prize awarded by APCA - Associação Paulista de Críticos de Arte (Art Critics Association of São Paulo) for best fiction, for her novel "INIMIGAS ÍNTIMAS" ("INTIMATE ENEMIES").
Nowadays, she is dedicating herself to write a saga about the Brazilian Northeastern population, starting in 1954 until 2004: this novel is part of a tetralogy called "O CORAÇÃO DOS OUTROS NÃO É TERRA QUE SE PISE" ("NO ONE'S HEART IS LAND TO BE TREAD ON"), begun with "INIMIGAS ÍNTIMAS" (Intimate Enemies) and followed by "O CÃO CHUPANDO MANGA" ("THE DEVIL SUCKING MANGO"). See more details. Above all, she thinks literature to be a privilege. That's why she carries on with such enthusiasm.
