Denise Parma was born in Teresina (Piauí State, Brazil) as Denise Parma de Albuquerque. She left Teresina when she was three years old moving to the South of Maranhão State and living in the cities Paraibano and São José dos Patos.

She keeps some memories from that time: the mountains and the red clay of the backwoods, the cowboys with their leather clothes challenging their destiny in the core of the Caatinga (typical Northeast desert area). Cowboys leading the cattle with art, echoing their singing in the mountains, deceiving the pain caused by the thorns of life.

However her biggest memory is concerned with her first challenge: to learn how to read just to be allowed to go to the primary school. She learnt it. She went to the school.

One more moving, this time to the lower Maranhão State, to Santa Helena, city neighbour to Pinheiro, where José Sarney was born (former Brazilian President). She spent 10 years in Santa Helena, facing enchants and disenchants, pains and discovers, and the turn of her childhood to her adolescence, full of spiritual confusion and many hidden verses as she was too afraid to let anyone read it.

In her heart, the constant beat that drove her far away to new worlds. She never kept secret of her wish to go away. In that time, she already had the disturbing feeling that made she realise that that place was too small for her.

She moved again after finishing the secondary school. This time back to Teresina. She tried to recognise the land, searching in her memories and in the stories told by her mother. At the same time, she felt familiar and also as a stranger. New discovers.

With the time passing by, the city that in the past seamed to be so big, suddenly, became small. The disturbing feeling crossed her life again showing that she needed to see more.

This time she didn't go by road, she flew arriving in The Netherlands. That low and flat land was different from everything that she ever saw. A world of new culture embraced her.
