The Collections represent one of the prime resources for Gypsy and Romany studies in Europe, and are particularly strong in material relating to the culture and language of Britain's Romany Gypsies. They also include much valuable information on the social history of European Gypsies and Travelling people in general. The Collections are mainly historical and include many rare items - amongst them:

  • comprehensive genealogies for many of the best-known British Romany families, including those of the Smiths, Boswells, Lees and Woods.
  • an invaluable collection of notebooks and manuscripts recording the vocabularies of Hungarian, Polish, Bulgarian and East Anglian Romani
  • Romani-to-English glossaries and a register of Gypsy names
  • several hundred photographs and slides of Gypsies in various countries from approximately 1900 to 1940
  • a developing collection of over 12,000 books (both fiction and non-fiction) pertaining to Gypsy life and lore
  • correspondence - spanning the years 1908 to 1973 - of the Gypsy Lore Society and its leading members, R A Scott Macfie and Dora Yates
  • a small collection of recordings of Gypsy music on vinyl, predominantly of East European and Spanish origin
  • extensive holdings of newspaper and magazine cuttings, from approximately 1900 to the 1970s
