To paraphrase Erasmus - "When I have money, I buy books. If there's any left, I eat."

No doubt about it, I love books, especially non-fiction, specifically history and biography. Some books I love are great and important works, some are NOT, but I love them anyway.

The work of fiction with the single greatest personal impact has been Upton Sinclair's "The Jungle." Another novel of great influence is Dalton Trumbo's "Johnny Got His Gun." Reading both books, and viewings of "All Quiet on the Western Front" (1930) and "Saving Private Ryan" (1998), ought to be mandatory for all testosterone-positive adolescents. Every few years, I feel a need to reread Richard Henry Dana's "Two Years Before the Mast."
