Mill Hill Music Festival hosts top Jewish music ensemble

The Organisers of the Mill Hill Music Festival are thrilled that the 1999 Festival will be staging a concert by Britain’s top Jewish music ensemble, The Burning Bush. The North London-based group will be performing on Thursday 10 June at Copthall School and a wonderful musical journey through centuries of Jewish musical tradition lies in store for Festival goers.

The Burning Bush have been described as ‘ revelation’ by reviewers and they combine the talents of some of Britain’s foremost performers in the field of early and traditional Jewish music. It was formed after singer and broadcaster, Lucie Skeaping was commissioned by the BBC to make a programme to mark the quincentenary of the expulsion of the Jews from Spain, and to research her own Jewish roots. Since their sell-out debut concert at London’s Queen Elizabeth Hall, they have performed at major Festivals, art centres and cultural events throughout the UK and much of Europe. In June 1999 they are performing at St John’s Smith Square with The Zemel Choir.

"The Festival organisers felt very strongly that we wanted the 1999 Festival’s programme to reflect the cultural diversity of the Mill Hill community and in particular to draw on the rich Jewish music tradition" said Festival Organiser Walter Felman who booked the group "I was aware of Lucie Skeaping’s work and was thrilled that the Burning Bush agreed to perform in Mill Hill, Festival-goers are in for a real treat"

Using traditional instruments the group’s performance will take the audience on a musical journey through the moving and colourful world of Jewish music through the centuries with Chassidic dances, Russian klezmer melodies, comic songs of the Yiddish theatre, songs of the Ghetto and haunting Sephardic ballads of the Old Ottoman world.

Tickets are £6 (£5 concessions) and are available in person from Nomad Travel in Mill Hill Broadway or by post from the Box Office, 20 Featherstone Rd, Mill Hill, NW7 2BN. For details of group discounts you can call the Organisers on 0181 455 1363.
