WATER BAPTISM

Matthew 28:19  Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost.
Purpose:  To understand what God's word says about water baptism and to realize the importance of water baptism in the life of the believer.

1.  What does "baptize" mean"?

a.  Greek word: Baptisma.  The process of immersion, submersion, and emergence.  It came from the same word that is sometimes translated "to dip".  Originally it meant to dye a garment.

b.  When it is used to describe the baptizing of a person, it denotes ownership (property) by the one whose name a person was/is baptized into.

2.  Jesus baptism by John the Baptist.

a.  Baptism of repentance

3.  Believer's baptism types

a.  Baptism of the New Birth  (Born Again)  Baptizer: Holy Spirit, Element:  Body of Christ, Object:  Sinner becomes New Creation/creature.

b.  Baptism with Water   Baptizer: Local Church, Element: Water, Object: New Believer.

c.  Baptism in the Holy Spirit   Baptizer:  JESUS, Element: Holy Spirit,  Object:  Witness

4.  Believer's Baptism.

a.  Baptism of the new believer is an outward and visible sign or act of obedience that is the public confession of an inward possession and work.

c.  Command of Jesus involves 3 areas.  Matt 28:19-20

1.  Make disciples of ALL  men
2.  Baptizing
3.  Teaching everyone to observe those things Jesus taught
d.  Mark 16:15-16

e.  Infant baptism does not signify a work of salvation.  It is a sign of dedication and consecration by believing parents.
