Work In Progress

Here’s a sneak peek at work in progress.

The Palm Vx:

We've been using a Palm Vx not only for the usual personal information management functions, but also for such special purpose functions as GPS navigation (with the Magellan GPS Companion). We report on our experience with the unit and a number of third-party software packages.

PCS Feature: Pacific Bell Mobile Services:

Many features of PCS phones are a function of the service provider. We’ve been working with Pacific Bell Mobile Services as our home carrier in California and Nevada. We’ll discuss their service (excellent) and the many messaging and voice mail services included with their PCS service. We’ve also just completed a transcontinental car trip and will report on what it’s like to roam with GSM service

Sony ETAK SkyMap Pro:

This hardware/software combination turns one’s portable PC into a Global Positioning Satellite navigation system. With highway maps of the entire US, and street maps of major metropolitan areas, it’s the ideal auto navigation tool. It can tell you how to get where you want to go, track where you are and your progress, and provides many other useful features. Its GPS antenna connects to your PC via a PCMCIA card; maps are on CD-ROM for downloading to one’s computer; an infrared remote control can operate the unit without the need to use the many available menu commands. Just the ticket for the auto traveler, the salesman, and anyone who’s ever wondered how to navigate their car from A to B.

Virtual PC for the Macintosh-Have your OS and eat it too:

Though we cover both PC and Macintosh hardware and software, we make no secret of the soft spot in our hearts (mainly due to ease-of-use and reliability) for the Macintosh. We’ll be reviewing several packages, including Virtual PC, which turns one’s Mac into a Windows machine so that one can run software not available in Native Mac versions. The package has proven quite effective, but needs a fast Mac (such as the current generation of Gx machines) for best performance

Web Page Design and Management

Many of our readers make use of the Internet's World Wide Web for informational and advertising home pages. We review two of the most interesting Web software packages--Adobe Go Live and Net Objects Fusion. We'll compare the new releases of each for ease of use, ease of site management, and major features.

Other software features: FileMaker Pro

FileMaker Pro has long been our favorite data base program, again because of its ease of use. Originally a flat-file program, we’ll be taking a look at its very powerful relational data base features in the current version.
