Books and Pamphlets
I have provided links on
this page to provide more information about the books described
below. Unfortunaltely, most of these links are to booksellers.
The only bookseller, linked below, that I have used is the
Yellowstone Association. I have always had good service from the
Yellowstone Association. The other booksellers linked below may
also be good but I have never used them and I do not know
anything about them.
The best source for current Yellowstone books,
maps and pamphlets is the Yellowstone Association.
Among other things, the YA operates the bookstores at the various
visitor centers throughout the park. To purchase books, maps, or
pamphlets about the park before you arrive, contact the
Yellowstone Association at (307) 344-2293.

Pamphlets
There are interpretive pamphlets, or "Trail Leaflets", that
describe the Upper Geyser Basin, Canyon, Norris, Fountain
Paint Pot, Mammoth, West Thumb and Mud Volcano areas. These
pamphlets are available at the starts of many of the trails
through these areas and at all of the visitor centers. You
can keep the pamphlet for $.25 (1997) or just borrow it at
the trailhead for free if you return it. All of these
pamphlets are worthwhile and will help interpret some of what
you are seeing. They also make a cheap souvenir. If you can't
wait, you can order the pamphlets before you get to the park
by contacting the Yellowstone Association.

Tour
books
- Fodor's
National Parks of the West is one of the best
general tour books of Yellowstone, and other western
National Parks, that I have found. It does not go into
too much detail on what you will see and has no pictures
but it provides all the information you will need to plan
and enjoy your trip to Yellowstone. ISBN: 0-679-03509-5
$17.50
- Wyoming
Handbook from Moon Publications is a good source
of information about Wyoming, Yellowstone and the
Yellowstone Gateway communities of West Yellowstone and
Gardiner Montana. The book not only contains detailed
descriptions of Yellowstone's attractions, too detailed
for my tastes, it also has a lengthy section about
Yellowstone's history. ISBN: 0918373980 $17.95
- Hamilton's
Guide to Yellowstone National Park by Alan W.
Cundall & Herbert T. Lystrup, and put out by
Hamilton Stores is an excellent, and
cheap, guide devoted entirely to Yellowstone. It is full
of pictures and useful information. ISBN: X12364864
$4.95
- National
Geographic's Guide to the National Parks of the United
States is a comprehensive guide to all of the US
National Parks. Typical of National Geographic
publications, it contains many beautiful pictures. It
also has short descriptions of each National Park with
suggestions on what to see and do. It also has a map of
each park.ISBN: 0870448854 $24.00
- Yellowstone
Grand Teton Road Guide is a nice driving guide of
the park. It is a long narrow book. When you open the
book, the left page has a detailed map of that section of
road and the facing page has commentary on the sites to
see along that section of road. All of the paved roads in
both parks are covered in this manner. ISBN:
1881480054 $5.95
- Yellowstone -- The Continuing Story is more of a
picture book than a guide book. There are many nice
pictures in the book that may give you inspiration while
planning your trip but be warned that this 20 year old
book is out of date with respect to some of its
information. $7.95
- AAA guide book for Idaho, Montana and Wyoming is
the book I use to find lodging in the gateway towns.

Flora
and Fauna
-
Large
Mammals Of Yellowstone And Grand Teton National Parks
by Karen Craighead, is a decent small turse booklet with
lots of information about Yellowstone's wildlife and some
ideas about where they can be found. ISBN: 0934948003
$1.95
- Yellowstone
Wildlife-A Watcher's Guide by Todd Wilkinson,
provides much of the same information as the above
mentioned book but does so in, what is for me, an easier
to read format. This book also gives more extensive
information about the wildlife and where to see it in
Yellowstone. ISBN: 155971140X $11.95
- Peterson
Guide: Western Birds by Roger Troy
Peterson, is the best field guide to the birds of Western
North America that I have found. I find this guide more
useful than any of the bird guides written specifically
for the Yellowstone area. ISBN: 039551424X $16.95
- Wildflowers
Of Grand Teton And Yellowstone National Parks by
Richard J. Shaw, may not be everything I'd want in a
wildflower guide but it is about the best guide offered
for the region. ISBN: 0937512052 $6.95

Geology
-
Geysers of Yellowstone by T.
Scott Bryan, is THE geyser reference book. It lists
almost every geyser in Yellowstone and gives up to date
information on their characteristics and what to look for
before an eruption. If you become interested in the
geysers, this is the book for you. ISBN: 087081365X
$19.95.
- Roadside
Geology of the Yellowstone Country by William J.
Fritz, provides a not too detailed geography lesson about
the Yellowstone region and points out various telltale
signs of geologic activity along the park roads. ISBN:
087842170X $10.00

History
-
A Yellowstone Album: A
Photographic Celebration of the First National Park
Commentary by Lee H. Whittlesey and the Yellowstone
Staff, Managing Editor Marsha Karle. This book, published
in 1997, commemorates the 125th Anniversary of
Yellowstone National Park by presenting the parks history
through old archival photos and short commentary. It is a
very well conceived and executed book and is the best of
the books published for the anniversary. It was a joy to
read. ISBN: 1570981477 $19.95
- The
Yellowstone Story : A History of Our First National Park
(Vol 1 & 2) by Aubrey L. Haines, is THE
authoritative work on Yellowstone history. If you only
feel up to purchasing one history book about Yellowstone,
then I recommend volume 1 which discusses the pre-history
of the park, early exploration and early management of
the park. Vol 1: ISBN: 0870813900 $19.95, Vol 2: ISBN:
0870813919 $19.95
- Discovery of Yellowstone National Park by
Nathaniel P. Langford, is, after the first chapter or
two, an interesting account of the first formal
expedition into the park. It was this expedition and the
subsequent work of Langford and others on the expedition
that ultimately lead to Yellowstone's designation as a
National Park. ISBN: 0803257058 $8.95
- Lost
in the Yellowstone : Truman Everts' 'Thirty-Seven Days of
Peril' by Truman Everts, Lee H. Whittlesey
(Editor), makes a nice companion book to Langford's.
Everts was a member of Langford's party. He became lost
in Yellowstone and this book describes his nearly fatal
attempt to get back to civilization. ISBN: 0874804817
$10.95
- Yellowstone
Place Names by Lee H. Whittlesey, provides
history and explanations on many of the names associated
with features in the park. This is a good quick reference
to many of the names in the park. ISBN: 0917298152
$11.95
- Yellowstone
Place Names : Mirrors of History by Aubrey L.
Haines, is less extensive in the number of place names
discussed but much more extensive in the history behind
each name than Whittlesey's book. Haines also takes a
more narative approach to the subject than Whittlesey.
Unfortunately, there seem to be some errors in this book
but these errors would only be noticeable to die hard
Yellowstone enthusiasts. ISBN: 0870813838 $17.50
(This book is also available in hard cover.)
-
Death in Yellowstone: Accidents and Foolhardiness in the First
National Park by Lee H. Whittlesey, is a fascinating and
cautionary treatise on the dangers of Yellowstone. ISBN: 1570980217
$16.95

Trip
Planner
- The
Yellowstone Association has the following offer
available via mail order only (you do not get a discount
when purchasing this set in the park):
TRIP PLANNER
Includes:
This is not a bad deal although, I'd prefer a few
different books. Yellowstone: The Official Guide is
alright but not my favorite.
Yellowstone Trails-A Hiking Guide is the
best hiking guide of Yellowstone that I have found. Yellowstone
Trail Map is a convenient waterproof, topographic,
trail map of the park. Yellowstone/Teton Road Guide
is a good mile by mile road guide of the park. Wildflowers
of Yellowstone and Grand Teton is ok but I've never
found a wildflower guide for the region that I've been
totally satisfied with.
Overall, the the Trip Planner is a good deal if you
want to get a wide variety of books about Yellowstone
before you get to the park. If nothing else, it should
help you plan your trip.

Politics
- Books on Yellowstone politics always get me upset and I
rarely finish them so I don't have any to recommend here.
The Yellowstone
Association carries many books about the politics of
Yellowstone as do many of the bookstores in the
Yellowstone Gateway towns. If you are interested in this
subject, then I suggest you talk to the YA or the people
at the bookstores for more information.
