cover The Stand by Stephen King.
This is absolutely the best book I have ever read! What if a virus wiped out 99.5% of the population of the world? This is what happens in The Stand. Follow stragglers from all over the country as they come together to form two groups, one good and one evil. The way these diverse folks meet and become friends is masterfully written, but that is only the first half of the book. The second half deals with the good group taking a stand against the forces of evil. If you thought Stephen King was all blood and guts, this will change your mind. His genious shines as all the loose ends come together into an intricate puzzle. This is easily his best work ever.

War and Remembrance : A Novel, by Herman Wouk.
Even better than The Winds of War, this sequel follows the Henry family through World War II. Pug gets his own battleship. Byron gets submarine duty. Warren gets air duty. Byron's Jewish wife, Natalie, their son, and Natalie's famous author uncle are trapped in Nazi Germany. Truly one of the best World War II novels ever written.

coverThe Sword of Shannara, by Terry Brooks.
This book grabs your attention quickly, and never looks back. I have never been a huge fan of fantasy, but Sword of Shanara is an exception to that rule, as Brooks takes you on an adventure you will never forget.
