The Virtual Burkharts - Joyce and Bob

After four and a half years of getting our users ready for twenty-first century research via the Burkhart Guide to the Internet, by early 2002 we Burkharts felt we'd accomplished our mission. When we began the site in 1997, the Web was a smaller place, but with far fewer guideposts and search aids. Then the Burkhart Guide was a much-needed tool for librarians and beginning researchers. Now we just tell newbies, "Use Google!" For those of you who visited this site in its heyday, we hope it in some small way made your Internet tasks easier.

Lest you think we are now idle, please read on about what we have done and are doing in terms of Internet use and Web page creation.

Joyce Burkhart

From 1984 to mid-2003, I did a number of jobs - as faculty member, library manager, cyber-librarian and finally researcher for St. Petersburg College in Florida, with a one-year "sabbatical" (1999-2000) spent working with husband Bob at the American University of the Caribbean on the island of St. Martin.

Since leaving St. Petersburg College, I have started my own business, Information Finders, and provide instructional, research and editorial services for several academic institutions. I regularly write a publication, Best Educational E-Practices, which offers a bi-monthly look at issues of concern in the delivery of distance education today.

BTW, I'm also a tremendous fan of the Sesame Street character, Grover,
whose namesake now lives with us.

Bob Burkhart

I am presently in charge of the medical library for the Bayfront Medical Center in St. Petersburg, Florida. In this and my former medical library positions, I have frequently used the Internet to locate current and reliable health-related information. In fact, I have created a completely virtual library (password protected) for the doctors and staff at Bayfront that allows them to do their research from their offices and homes.

The Internet is the best source of medical and health information now available. It should be a starting point for practitioners and patients alike. If you want to send me comments or suggestions, please do.
