In the early 1900's Rosaria DiTavi's two daughters,

They first settled in the North End section of Boston, Massachusetts and later moved to the Ashmont section of Dorchester, MA.
Rosaria lived with her daughter Josephine and took care of her grandchildren while Josephine worked as a seamstress at the I.J. Fox Company on Winter Street in Boston.

Around 1920 Rosaria and her daughter, Josephine, had a disagreement and Rosaria asked her other daughter, Angelina, to move to East Boston with her and so Angelina took her five children and moved. Rosaria and her daughter Josephine eventually made up and Rosaria moved back in with her again.

Sari was also known as "Russell" by some.
In the early 1900's Angelina emigrated from Sicily by ship to the United States of America with her sister
Guiseppa "Josephine" to join their husbands, Vincenzo Zuffante and Sari Butera. With Angelina were her two children, Marie and Joseph. They first settled in the North End section of Boston and later lived on Everett Street in Dorchester, MA. Sari's father, Joseph Butera, lived with them.

In 1908 Angelina and her sister
Guiseppa "Josephine" were both pregnant at the same time. Josephine gave birth to her second child, Saverio Zuffanti and Angelina gave birth to her third child, Rosina Butera. They were later baptized together at Sacred Heart Church, a Catholic church in the North End of Boston.

Sari Butera was a cobbler who made shoes for people and had a contract to make shoes for the Boston Police Department.

Sari would call all five of his children into the cobbler shop to watch them while their mother Angelina took in sewing. She was a tailor who made men's suits that sold for $500.00. Angelina would spend her day picking up items to mend while her husband watched the children and then she would stay up until 2:00 in the morning sewing. She made all of her children's clothes and would have them "show off" their clothes around town to increase her business.
Sari Butera died at the young age of 36 from Pleurisy which left Angelina a young widow with five children after 14 years of marriage. Angelina's mother, Rosaria gathered up the five children and brought them all to the hospital to say goodbye to their father.

Marie "Philomena" (Butera) LoVerme

This picture was taken in 1994.

Marie was known by most people as "Phil" although she preferred to be called Marie. Philomena was just a nickname given to her as a young girl and she never liked the name.

In 1920, when Marie was only 16 years old, she moved with her grandmother, mother and siblings to East Boston. She had a job, studied hard to graduate from high school and then married John LoVerme who later became a Neurosurgeon in New York City.

Marie and John LoVerme had a son, Stephen Russell LoVerme on August 30, 1921.

The marriage didn't last and Marie moved back home with her family. Marie's mother Angelina had to take her 14-year-old daughter,
Rosina out of school to stay at home and help care for her sister Marie's baby, Stephen as well as to help take care of the rest of the family while they worked.
Marie (know by most a Philomena) was also was a wonderful baker and everyone always looked forward to her visits, as she would bring her delicious pastries.

Phil baked the wedding cakes and made the bride's garter for many family weddings over the years.

Phil lived with her sister Sarah in Dorchester, MA and later in Quincy, MA.

Phil worked as a Cost Accountant for many years at various companies and didn't retire until she was age 85.

Joseph C. Butera was born May 08, 1905 in Riesi, Caltanissetta, Sicily.

He was named after his paternal
grandfather.

When Joseph was only one year old he emigrated to the United States with his mother, Angelina (DiTavi) Butera, his three year old sister Marie (also known as Philomena) and his Aunt Josephine (DiTavi) Zuffante in the early 1900's.
As a young man Joseph traveled around Europe alone studying art. He worked on a steamer ship to pay his way.

Joseph won a scholarship to the Wagner School of Sign and Commercial Art, (which was founded by Charles Wagner in 1910).

Joe Butera at Ogunquit, Maine

Joseph Butera founded the Butera School of Fine Arts in 1932. His sister Rose would work there each day until noon with him selling student supplies before going to her bookkeeping job at the Columbia Road Garage in Dorchester where she worked 1:00 to 6:00 pm six days a week. Rose remembers many debutants arriving at the college in limousines.

In 1953 Joseph bought out the Wagner School and since then, the Wagner programs have been part of the Butera curriculum.
Joseph married Sylvia Lyon and they had one son:   Joseph Lyon Butera.

Joseph L. Butera married Elizabeth "Betsy" Roylance Yates, who grew up in Darien CT and New York City. He met Betsy when she was 12 years old and he was 11. She had summered in Massachusetts on Cape Cod and began working for Joseph C. Butera in one of his Art stores on Main Street in Hyannis, MA.
Joseph L. and Elizabeth "Betsy" Butera had one son
John Gunter Butera who currently runs the Butera School of Art that has now developed into a Commercial Art School.

Joseph C. Butera died November, 29, 1963 from a massive heart attack at a restaurant while dining with his lawyer.

Rosina Butera was born in November 19, 1907.

Rosina goes by the name of "Rose".

Rose was a very smart girl in school but had to leave high school at age 14 to help take care of her sister
Marie's baby when Marie returned home after a failed marriage. Rose went to night school to continue her education and earned her high school diploma.
Rose was an "associate" at Saint Anne's in Cambridge where she almost became a nun. The priest told her she would make a wonderful mother and would not allow it.
In the late 1920's Rose was maid-of-honor at her cousin Rosaria Zuffante wedding when her cousin married Giacomo "Jack" Messina. Rose remembers that she wore an orchid velvet and chiffon gown and carried tiny yellow roses on a circle lace doily.
During World War II Rose was a "pen pal" to all of the soldiers who were from her church and were overseas fighting the war. Friends have told Rose that they still remember receiving her letters and how much it meant to them so far away from home.
Years ago, Rose's neighbor had lost his wife in childbirth leaving him with 5 small children to care for. Rose asked him what he was going to do and he told her that he would have to give the children up for adoption. Rose who is Episcopalian wrote to the Catholic Richard Cardinal Cushing and advised him of this man's situation. She asked if there was anything that the Catholic Church could do. The Cardinal made arrangements for a live-in caretaker to stay with them until the children became of high school age, paid for by Catholic Charities. (The payment was made directly to the man so that he could pay the helper himself.)
Rose was elected "Woman of the Year" by the YMCA for her acts of kindness and social work.

This white hat was imported from Paris
Rose got this hat at Wethern's.

Rose wore this "silly" hat (as she called it)
on her first date with Malcolm Applegate.

Rose wrote a beautiful book of poetry with 85 poems. Channel 13 wanted to interview Rose but she would not be interviewed on television. Instead, they read two of her poems on the air with her name displayed on the television screen. Her son Bob recorded the reading and Rose's grandson, Geoffrey, enjoyed his grandmother's surprise. A 30" Poem written in Calligraphy is hanging in a Dorchester Nursing Home.
Rose worked for eight years as a secretary and social worker at All Saints Church in Dorchester, MA before she married Malcolm Hurd Applegate (b-1902).

Rose's sister Anne and Anne's husband Sal lived with Rose and Malcolm until Rose discovered she was pregnant and they moved into Sal's mother's home.

Rose and Malcolm Applegate had one child:

Robert Gerald Applegate born May 08, 1947

Rose and Bobby Applegate

After Rose married she did volunteer work at her church for the next 22 years until her husband became disabled.

Rose worked for the next six years as a caterer at Saint Paul's Cathedral on Tremont Street in Boston, MA where she prepared delicious meals for many large functions and for famous guests. Rose retired at age 69.

Rose was very active in the social activities and had also written for the newspaper at Presidential Manor in Dorchester where she had become a resident.
Malcolm Applegate passed away.

Rose (Butera) Applegate passed away in 2004 at the age of 95, soon after she completed writing her life story. At her funeral, a man came to pay his respects, and it turned out he was a child of the woman Rose had helped many years ago by writing to Cardinal Richard Cushing to help his father and siblings after his mother had died. He remembered that Rose was the one who helped keep his family together. He had copies of the letter from the Cardinal.

Vincent Joseph Zuffante was born on September 1, 1920

Vincent was the third son of Vincenzo & Guiseppa Zuffante.

Vincent J. Zuffante
Vincent J. Zuffante-1923 Vincent J. Zuffante-1930 Vincent J. Zuffante-1933 Vincent J. Zuffante-1936
Vincent spelt his surname with an 'e' at the end.

Vincent was a handsome young Italian man who met a girl four years younger than himself in Dorchester. Her name was Mary Byrne. Vin enjoyed going over to the Byrne home because Mary's mother, Effie Byrne played the piano. Vin and Mary's brother Martin Byrne, (who everyone called Brother because he had 8 sisters) would play their harmonicas along with Effie's piano tunes while the whole group would do a sing along.

Vin bought Mary her first pair of ice skates when she was only 14 years old. They used to flood the park across the street from the Byrne home for ice-skating. Everyone would gather at the Byrne "clubhouse" to put on his or her skates and walk across the street to skate.

Vin's father Vincenzo, who was a barber and owned a barbershop in Dorchester, went to visit Mary Byrne when she was 17 years old and was recovering from having her tonsils out.

Vin dated Mary, taking the subway, as he had no car, going to the North End and walking to the Boston Gardens. They fell in love; he bought her a hope chest in 1942 for Valentine's Day and proposed.

Vincent J. Zuffante married Mary Elizabeth Byrne the following September 26, 1943 at St. Mark's Church in Dorchester. Mary's sister Beatrice was her maid of honor and their wedding reception was held at Vin's parent's home at 12 Center Avenue, Dorchester, MA.

Here is a picture of Vin and Mary Zuffante

Vin went in the Army in 1942 to serve in WWII. Vin lived at
Camp Gordon in Georgia with Mary where he was stationed until he left to go overseas in September 1944.

While Vin was stationed overseas Mary lived with his family in Dorchester, MA. Mary learned to cook Italian meals from her mother-in-law Josephine (Guiseppa) and to understand the broken English mixed with Sicilian language that was spoken by the extended family living within the home or nearby.

In February of 1945 Mary saw her mother-in-law, Josephine (Guiseppa) carry her unconscious father-in-law, Vincenzo, up a flight of stairs from their wine cellar after Vincenzo had taken a heart attack and soon after died.

Vin was discharged from the Army in January, 1946 and was sent to Camp Kilmar in NJ and then to Fort Devens, MA. Vin's oldest brother, Saverio, (aka Sal) took Mary by train to visit Vin at Fort Devens.

Brothers — Sal and Vin

After the war was over, Vin returned to Dorchester. Mary and he had their first child in 1946 and their second in 1950. They finally bought their first car. Vin worked for White Brother's Milk company.

Patricia A. Zuffante was born in Dorchester, MA in 1950.

Patty at 6 months

Patty and her Aunt Rose Messina - Dorchester 1952.

Just before Patty turned 4 years old, she and her family moved to Braintree, MA in September of 1954.

Patty took tap dancing and ballet lessons as a little girl and tried to play the guitar as a teenager.

At age 14, in 1964, the Beatles and music, writing poetry and sculpting clay as well painting were the highlights of Patty's suburban life.

During the summertime the family would visit Aunt Bea's family at their cottage in Halifax. Patty and her cousin, Maureen McEntee, were swimming at the nearby lake one summer when Patty nearly drowned. Maureen was trying to teach Patty how to swim and when Patty stood up there was not bottom to stand on. After a panic Patty was pulled from the lake by a lifeguard. As hard as the cousins tried to keep it from the parents and family, the lifeguard notified them anyway.

In her senior year of high school Pat dated a young man from East Braintree named Joseph E. Daru who worked at the Fore River Shipyard in Quincy as a pipe fitter. He was a very smart and shy man who enjoyed anything to do with automobiles and rebuilding the engines. He also had an antique fire-engine he worked on in his driveway for the year that Patty was dating him. Each day someone would usually try to crank the old crank on the front of the fire-engine to see if it would start. Finally, the paperboy one day gave it a crank and it sputtered and choked then kicked in, everyone in the neighborhood yelling and cheering! What a time!

She graduated from Braintree High School in 1968. Joe gave Pat a hope chest and a ruby and diamond ring and they announced their wedding engagement.

Pat married Joseph E. Daru on June 21, 1969 at Saint Claire Church in Braintree.

Here is Patricia Zuffante's wedding picture

After a honeymoon in Bar Harbor and Arcadia, Maine, Pat and Joe settled in Braintree, across from Sunset Lake. Joe began working for Maynard Fire Apparatus in Marshfield building new Fire Engines. He also put a metal lathe in his workroom and began a project that took years to finish, the building of a steam powered locomotive train, cars, tracks and all.

Pat and Joe Daru had one child:
Darcie L. Daru Born 1970 Resides in North Weymouth, MA

Although they divorced, Pat and Joe always shared the upbringing of their daughter, Darcie. Darcie would visit her Dad and his Aunt Gert in East Braintree every other weekend These bi-weekly visits to Dad's continued after he and Aunt Gert moved to East Bridgewater, Ma. Here, Joe set up his train with tracks to ride around his property. There he had fruit trees, blueberry bushes and an in ground swimming pool too!

Pat traveled and moved several times, always working and attending school evenings and seminars at her places of employment. While working at Draper Laboratory in Cambridge Ma, Pat attended school evenings and graduated from Newbury College with a degree in Computer Science.

In 1988 Pat's father, Vincent Zuffante, was very ill so she moved back home to help. She had a second floor built on the family ranch house, making it a garrison, the same house she had lived in from 1954 until she married in 1969.

Pat is employed at CitiStreet, a State Street and Citigroup company, as an Internet Associate in Product Development. She lives with her long time partner, Sheila, and her mother, Mary, in Braintree.

Joseph Daru finally reached his long time goal of moving to California. He was starting his own business in his new home, Mt. Baldie, just east of Los Angeles, when he tragically died in November of 1997 from diabetes and heart disease at the young age of 49.

Anne Marie Zuffante was born in 1958 in Weymouth, MA. She lived in Braintree with her sister Patty and her brother Vinny.

After Anne moved from her parent's home in Braintree into an apartment in Natick, MA., she ran into an aquantance, Joseph Canty (b-1958). Joe was originally from Weymouth MA. and just happened to be living near Anne's home in Natick.
Anne and Joseph Canty dated, fell in love and married in 1986.

Anne wore her mother's
wedding dress.

Anne passed the Certified Professional Secretary certification (CPS) in 1988, offered by the International Association of Administrative Professionals.

Hi
My name is Gerard Zuffante and I came across your web site while researching the name Zuffante and am very curious about my lineage, just as it appears you were about yours also. I have had little contact with my father's side of the family after my parents split up back in the 1960's. My grandfather was named Giusepe Paulino Zuffante and my grandmother's name was Pauline Cicarelli and they were from Palermo Sicily. They came to the US in about 1900. That is the extent of my knowledge...Did those names come up in your research? Drop me a line, I would love to think that I have some relatives out there.

I really enjoyed your web site, GREAT JOB!

Thanks,
Gerry Zuffante
    Gerry,
Glad you enjoyed the website. I actually have a manual booklet put together by my now deceased cousin, Charlie Zuffante, where I found most of the info on the website.

He had the various Zuffante family trees divided into sections in his booklet, my family info was in section D or E, can't remember now. Anyway, there are sections on Zuffante's in the other sections that were not included in my family website.

I'll dig out the manual booklet and see if I can find some reference to the names you gave me in your message and let you know.

    Where are you from??

Thanks and nice hearing from you.
    Pat Zuffante
Hi,
Yes, Charles R. Zuffante lived in W. Newton so it must be the same one.

I found the following in his book, not sure if it's your side of the family but here goes:

Giuseppe Zuffante Born 1875
Immigrated to the US in 1903, departed from Naples on the SS New England on 03/24/03, arrived in Port of Boston 04/07/03, listed on the shin's manifest of alien passengers as a 27 year old unmarried laborer who could read and write his native language. His last known address Villa Rosa with destination to Boston US. He had $10 in his possession and was going to join his cousin, Giuseppe Zuffante at 16 Charter Street Boston, MA, in good health and no physical deformities. Last known occupation Owner/Operator of G-Z Produce Co., Boston, MA.

He married Pauline Chicarelle who died in 1926, may have had 2nd wife named Lena.

They had 7 children:
    Natalina, b 1905
    Francesco B. b-1907
    Fortunato B. b-1912
    Fred G. b-1913
Giuseppe P. born 12/06/1917 (married Arlene Power born 03/21/28 or Arlene Caporale), Josephine b??
    Lillian b??.

Their son listed above, Giuseppe P, born 12/06/1917 and married, Arlene had 6 children (are you one of them?):
    Paul
    Rosann
    Gerard
    Alfred
    Joseph
    Margarite
Let me know if these names and dates match up with what you know.

Thanks

Pat,
It sounds like you have the right family. Giuseppe P became Joseph Paul Zuffante who was my father. He was married to Marguerite Sullivan and had five children. Joseph Paul Jr., Rosanne, Gerard (me), Alfred, and Germaine. My father left my mother and all his kids when I was about 9-10 and moved to California with a woman named Arlene. I never heard anything about my grandfather having a second wife. Do you think that they were referring to my father?

Thank you for your help, you have been very kind. Is everyone in the family called ZUFF? It appears that your family is very close as is mine. There must be some good genes within our pool. I'll forward this info to the rest of my family, I'm sure that they will be interested.

Thanks,
Gerry
