Summary of West Coast Ice I
This is an account of West Coast Ice I, originally referred to
as the "BayCon
Tourneyette", which was held at the
BayCon science fiction
convention at the San Jose Doubletree Hotel, Sunday, 30 May,
1999. This was the first Icehouse tournament ever to be held
west of Ohio.
First, the table of the scores and stuff (thanks to
Eeyore,
from whose basic format I cribbed heavily):
Key:
( )=Solo Win;
[ ]=2-way Tie;
{ }=3-way Tie;
% %=4-way Tie;

And now, a list of random thoughts about what made this tourney
what it was (good and bad):
- We didn't have access to the size of table that I would
have preferred, and had to make do with one large table (big
enough to seat 8+ around the outside) that we split down the
middle with masking tape (which is visible in a couple of the
pix).
- It was quite a relief to get 6 people! I had been worried
that we wouldn't get anyone...
- The teaching session was more expeditious than I'd
expected (I'd come prepared with a deck of slides and everything)
but it got the point across okay, except that I kinda regretted
skipping the
Mystique/Cool stuff.
- The Ice-Offs were actually 3-player games, not the
canonical 4-player. This was done so that we could have everyone
playing more or less at once. Every player got to play everyone
else, but it wasn't until I drew the results up in table format
that I realized that two of the players played against each other
(and one other rotating opponent) in all 4 or their games.
- We had 2 distinct origami sets (one RGBY and one origami
that I finished filling and gluing in my hotel room at the con)
and it just kinda organically happened that each player adopted
a stash and kept with it through the entire tournament. I'd
meant to break out my xyloid pieces for the finale, and it just
never came to pass.
- Despite what I'd meant to do, I wound up calculating
ratings based on all 4 ice-off games. At least it was
internally consistent.
- In Ice-Off 8, Adrian got put into the icehouse, but the
other two players decided not to call it on him because it wasn't
"nice". This probably had something to do with the award of the
CTI to Lindy...
- By popular demand among the finalists (and
the other referee), the
finals were kept to a single, winner-take-all game. Apologies to
those of you tourney veterans whom this might offend.
And, a photo gallery (photos by either myself or Beth
Zuckerman, with one exception)...
- Me, with some the
18" high cardboard
pyramids I made to prop up in the halls and get attention.
Beth seemed to like this picture of me. (BZ)
- A big pyramid (fully decorated) next to actual game pieces, for
size comparison. (EZ)
- The trophy.
Polyclay pyramid by me, painted lettering by
Mike Sugarbaker. The
"1999" on there is kinda lost in glare from the flash, but for
the record, it was orange in color. (EZ, I think)
- Ice-Off game #2

- Ice-Off game
#7 -- that's me on the right, Joseph Grayson in the
background, and Jesse Mundis on the left. I found this
depiction of Jesse eerily reminiscent of the picture of
Andy at Gen Con '98, right down to the tie-dyed shirt! (BZ)
- Cooler than
Ice recipient Lindy Laurent, with her CTI
marbled pyramid (see also
here for a better
view; I made that one, as well) and other contestant Eric
Kuritzky. (EZ, I think)
- The final
game (EZ)
- Joseph
Grayson receives his trophy, presented by Michelle Lepovic,
who doesn't like Icehouse (she does like
Zarcana, though) but insisted on being our Vanna,
trophywise, nevertheless. (EZ)
- The finalists pose for a Photo Op together. L to R: Joseph
Grayson, Ellen George, Jesse Mundis, Adrian Tymes. Note Joseph's
"Hillbillies
from
Mars" t-shirt...! (EZ)
Each of the finalists received an
origami
set, and Mr. Grayson also went home with a
Fluxx
deck, in addition to the trophy.
At this point, looks like we'll be doing West Coast Ice II next
year...! :-D
