Windows 2000/XP Driver Information and Downloads

Currently there are three Windows 2000/XP driver series that work for the Rage Pro family. All available drivers use the Windows Driver Model (WDM) format, so the number of main driver files is small. However, ATI divers still have a number of files which relate to the Control Panel and driver support. Extended Desktop, aka multimonitor, is only supported under Windows 9x/Me and XP. It is not and will not be supported under Windows 2000.. We can clearly see the progress made in driver development as we move from the stock Windows 2000 driver to the 40xx to the 50xx drivers.

Microsoft driver provided with Windows 2000 - 5.00.2179.1

This driver has very slow, and sometimes non-working, Direct3d performance. OpenGL and ATI Control Panels to adjust the TV-out signal are not available. If you do not have a problem with this driver, stick with it.

ATI driver version 5.00.2195.40xx - last version - 4056

The 40xx series has both Direct3d and OpenGL support, as well as the ATI control panels. It has shown little improvement over its various revisions. Performance is quite slow, and some features of the chipset are not implemented in the driver. Image quality is excellent except for anything that uses alpha blending. D3d performance is about 40% of windows 98. Motion compensation is not supported, so those DVDs are going to be rough. ATI has officially released 5.0.2195.4018.

Driver Versions 50xx, 57xx and 60xx

Prefixes may vary - 6.13.10, 5.01.2500, 5.10.2600, but all use similar code, hence similar performance.

2k -50xx - latest version - 5064
Microsoft driver provided with Windows XP - 5.01.2519.5007
XP - 57xx - latest version - 5805 - Extended Desktop and DXVA implemented.
XP - 60xx - latest version - 6010 - No Extended Desktop nor DXVA.

The 50xx series is DirectX 8 based and has significantly improved Direct3d performance while maintaining image quality. Responsible for this is the implementation of multi-texturing and 3 pass bump mapping. ATI supplied versions have the ATI control panels, so those Direct3D, OpenGL and monitor tabs are present. D3d performance is about 70% of windows 98. The latest revisions have support for DXVA. All 50xx series drivers require DirectX 8 for proper operation.

Windows XP ships with two sets of drivers for the Rage Pro based cards. The first is targeted for the Rage Pro, XC and XL (version 5.1.2493.0). The second is for the Mobility variants and the LT Pro (version 5007). As with all drivers on the Windows XP, 2000 and 9x CDs, advanced features such as the ATI control panels to adjust the TV-out and OpenGL support are not included in the drivers.

The 57xx series was the first (and only) to enable multimonitor on Windows XP. Released for the Mobility users, they provide some mouse pointer issues to non-mobility users.

The 60xx series came as a significant surprise to me, in that it was originally released for the Rage XL based cards. My first thought - The All in Wonder TV Tuner just might be supported with this driver series, and I was right. ATI has subsequently released 6010 with full support for the All in Wonder Pro. Multimonitor is not supported in the 60xx series.

Which driver should you use?

Windows 2000 - The 2k_5058 obviously! See below.

Windows XP - Determine your needs and decide - XP_5772 gives multimonitor and DXVA support. (DXVA for mobility users only). XP_6010 gives no multimonitor nor DXVA support. However, TV Tuner works.

All in Wonder Pro under Windows 2000 users are encouraged to use the ATI 5.0.2195.5013 official driver. This driver is also certified for use with Multi Media Centre 7.2 (MMC 7.2).

All in Wonder Pro under Windows XP users are encouraged to use the ATI 5.10.2600.6010 official driver. This driver is also certified for use with Multi Media Centre 7.2 (MMC 7.2).

How do I unlock various resolutions in the driver?

Driver Development

Windows 2000/XP drivers are WDM (Windows Driver model). This WDM package consist of three files -

Miniport driver - best explained here. The main purpose is to detect, initialize and configure the graphics adapter. As such it is responsible for implementing most features of the video card.
Display driver - responsible for 2d and Direct3d calls
OpenGL ICD - responsible for OpenGL calls.

I am providing miniport/display driver combinations as well as OpenGL ICDs for download. This way you can create your own custom driver. The miniport and display driver seem to work best in same version pairs, but they will work if mixed. Start with a working driverset, such as 2k_5011 below, and replace the existing files with the miniports/display/opengl drivers that are available. Remember to maintain the same naming convention.

The miniport, display driver and ICD come by various names. They can be renamed and placed into almost any driver set. A good rule is to avoid mixing drivers which are far apart in versions, eg. 4006 with 5020.

Miniport atimpab.sys ati2mpab.sys ati2mpad.sys
Display atidrab.dll ati2drab.dll ati2drad.dll
ICD   atio2kab.dll atio2kad.dll

Miniport/Display driver combinations.

Windows 2000/XP

4018    4037    4039    4045    4050    4056    5011    5020    5033    5040    5048    5064

Windows XP

5787    5795    5801    5805

(5020 and newer combinations support DXVA. If you are using the 2k_5011 driver as a starting point for modifications, install the driver using this inf for DXVA to be enabled.)

OpenGL ICDs

110.0    110.1    110.2    110.4    110.12    110.14    110.17    110.18    110.19    110.20

OpenGL ICDs are currently interchangeable between 2000 and XP drivers. 2000 Miniport/display drivers will work on XP. XP miniport/display drivers will not work on 2000.

Complete Windows 2000 Drivers. (XP compatible) DirectX 8.1 required.

6.13.1.5058 (2k_5058) - This is a DirectX 8 based driver that currently offers the best gaming performance under Windows 2000/XP. OpenGL and Direct3d on all Rage Pro based cards are supported. All ATI controls panels are implemented - with a twist. The control panels are now offered as a separate download for those that wish to use them. DXVA is supported in this release. TV-out is functional. Most resolutions are available. USWC has been disabled by default, so you can either edit the inf or the registry if you prefer it enabled. Disabling USWC significantly reduces the memory usage of this, and any, video card driver. USWC can improve performance slightly as well as hinder performance, but it is on a machine specific basis. You need to toggle the setting to see what is best. To reduce file size, the Video Capture section of the driver has been released as a separate download.

Complete Windows XP Drivers. (Not 2000 compatible)

5.00.2500.5772 (XP_5772) - This is a DirectX 8 based driver that supports all of the features of the Rage Pro chipset. OpenGL and Direct3d on all Rage Pro based cards are supported. All ATI controls panels are implemented. DXVA is supported (Note: Only Mobility users are able to use this feature. It is not implemented for Rage users). TV-out is functional. And finally, multimonitor is implemented. Most resolutions are available. For non-Mobility users, this driver, as well as newer drivers may cause your mouse pointer to disappear. Use of a 3d mouse pointer usually resolves the issue.

Do not use XP specific drivers on Windows 2000. XP has changed the way in which the miniport references the Operating System. As such, XP specific video drivers will not initialize under Windows 2000, resulting in a blue screen at system boot.

The best place for support is on the Rage Pro forum at Rage3d

Gaming under Windows 2000/XP

For the best OpenGL performance, use the 110.0 OpenGL ICD.

Operation Flashpoint - Use the 4056 Miniport coupled to the 50xx Display driver of choice.
