Purpose: To determine a math model using Newton’s third law that describes elastic & inelatic momentum using the collision of 2 carts.
Apparatus:
Part I
Part II
Part III
Procedure:
Collision carts (2)
Photogate timers(2)
500 Kg weights (2)
Cart track
Part I Parameter(Momentum of system) Indepdent variable(momentum
cart 1)
Depedent variable(momentum of cart 2)
1. Set the carts up so the opposing magnets face each other.
(e.g. north-north)
2. Push cart 1
3. Record the final velocity of cart 2 and the intial velocity
of cart 1.
Part II Parameter(Momentum of system) Indepdent variable(momentum
cart 1)
Depedent variable(momentum of cart 2)
1. Set the carts up with the velcro pads facing each other.
2. Push cart 1.
3. Record the initial velocity of cart 1 and the final velocity
of cart 1 +cart 2.
Part III Parameter(Momentum of system) Indepdent variable(momentum
cart 1)
Depedent variable(momentum of cart 2)
1. Set the carts up so that neither the velcro or the magnets
face each other.
2. Place a 500 Kg weight on cart 1.
3. Push cart 1
4. Record the inital velocity of cart 1, and the final velocity
of both carts 1 and 2.
5. After several trials, add another 500 Kg weight to cart 1
and repeat steps 3,4.
