As a Time Lord the Doctor can regenerate up to 12 times. He is currently in his eighth incarnation.
Eight actors have played the role of Gallifrey's most famous son, The Doctor.
The Doctor has travelled throughout time and space in his time machine - known as the TARDIS (Time and Relative Dimensions in Space). Due to a fault in it's chameleon circuit, it is stuck in the form of a battered blue British police box,. However, the TARDIS is vastly bigger on the inside than on the out. This is due to it being trans-dimensional in nature.
During his adventures, the Doctor has had more than thirty different assistants, from his granddaughter Susan to his current assistant, Charley Pollard. Some of the people who have travelled as the Doctor's asssistants have gone on to become household names, such as Louise Jamieson (from Eastenders).
These assistants have aided and abetted the Doctor whilst he has pitted his wits against some of the most memorable villians in TV history such as Daleks and Cybermen.
