"Yeah, I like classical" : or how I learned to stop worrying about pop culture and love the good stuff
So being a young classical fan isn't all that "well you must be smart!" fear and respect business.  Sometimes it's downright tortorous -at least in middle school/high school.  The ubiquitous pop music always threatens.  But once you get used to the fact that you don't agree with your peers, then you can sit back and enjoy the benefits of being a kid: you can be irreverent about it all.  You can definitely get away with comments like "The Ashkenazy Prok 3rd piano concerto is a better balanced recording, but in terms of sheer emotional gusto, Argerich just blows his ass right out of the water." Your friends accept this. This is the way you talk; you just happen to be talking about classical music and not pop.

My adventures in Classical websurfing
This is not to downplay the beauty, glory, genius(!,etc) of classical music - just saying that with 500+ years worth of music, you think there'd be something for everyone.  But some people think it's an elitist thing...heh. (I hope not, because if it is, I'm in trouble with the classical powers that be..)
So how irreverent is irreverent, eh?
