Info: in September 2002 and December 2003/January 2004, I was very lucky to be able to make two tourist trips to China, and stay with some friends there.

Here are some of the pictures; there are many, many more not shown here unfortunately; one day I shall scan a lot more in and enlarge these pages considerably.

NOTE: I went around on various tours for Chinese tourists only, on some of which most people spoke no English [arranged by my friends], which was amusing [I assume the foreigner tours are a lot more expensive]. I speak Chinese very well apparently, but only with an extremely limited vocabulary; the following useful phrases between them contain almost every word I know:

I WANT TO EAT CARROTS
YOU ARE VERY BEAUTIFUL
MY CHINESE IS NOT GOOD

...consequently, and combined with my poor aging memory, I may have got some of the facts/figures/locations in these pages slightly mixed up.
Amusing stuff:


"
NO CHUCK THING" (meaning, "don't throw litter"), as a sign in Shenzhen said.

"
Avoid falling into unseen trap of scum" (meaning, beware of conmen), as a Tourism Authority of Thailand warning sign says.

Food:
"
A green animal we eat" is the description of a frog, according to one of my Chinese friends.

The Jet Li films
The Shaolin Temple and Martial Arts of Shaolin contain scenes in which people eat a barbequed dog, frog congee, and snakeskin in steamed buns, willingly with great enjoyment! I've seen restaurants in China with roasted dog hanging outside to attract customers; and street food stalls in Bangkok with fried lizards, beetles, grasshoppers and various other unidentified insects...but the most unbelievable to me was some of my Chinese friends eating chicken feet - with toenails!! Urrgh...

NOTE: Tourists in China (at least 5 years ago, anyway) seem to be almost entirely Americans and Germans; I don't recall meeting a single English person there the whole time. Thailand seems to have a broader mixture of tourists [
UPDATE Feb. 2009 - although Bangkok does seem a bit less crowded now; I blame the PAD for their ridiculous and unfair terrorist airport blockade a few months ago].
