My name is Catriona Bebhinn and I am known to my family and
friends in Turkey as Hanimefendi Zaynab Yasmine bint Hasan. I
am the daughter of an Irish merchant who found it necessary to
marry me to God. Enroute to the abbey in Italy I was being sent
to the ship was attacked by Moorish Pirates who sent the woman
on board as tribute to the Sultan. I was lucky and was allowed
to be adopted by a high official in the court instead of being
sent to the Harem. (The adoption of daughters is one way for a
Muslim man to ensure his place in paradise.) I found the freedom
and treatment I received in Turkey was much more agreeable that
that of my Irish family and decided not to try to return and instead
try to assimilate in to the new culture. I am living as a renegade
Muslim in Istanbul with my new family in about the year 1610.
I spend my days going to the Bazaars, visiting the palace and
learning to run a proper household.
