GENERAL INFORMATION: ETIMOLOGY: Its native name has its origin in two Quechua words: Zara (head) and Uma (corn). The two words together mean "Head of Corn". FOUNDATION: The city was founded by Alonzo de Mercadillo, who also founded Loja, by commitment of the King of Spain, with the name of "Villa Real de Minas del Cerro Rico de San Antonio de Zaruma" ("Royal Mine Village of Zaruma Saint Anthony's Rich Hill"). Zaruma became Municipality's main city on November the 26th 1820. SURFACE: 643,5 Km2. ALTITUDE: 1.150 m above the sea level. TEMPERATURE: It ranges from 18 to 22 C Degrees. POPULATION: It has approximately 28.830 inhabitants. URBAN PARISHES: Zaruma (Municipality's main city). RURAL PARISHES: Abañín, Arcapamba, Guanazán, Güizhagüiña, Huertas, Malvas, Muluncay Grande, Salvias and Sinsao (Municipal parishes). ECONOMY: Mining industry, clothing industry, manufacture, commerce, general services, cattle raising, agriculture and lately tourism. CULTURAL VALUE: Zaruma is one of the oldest cities of Ecuador. It was declared "Patrimonio Cultural de la Humanidad" ("Cultural Patrimony of Ecuador") due to its colonial-like architecture. TYPICAL DISHES: Zarumean Coffee is well-known by its aroma and flavour. You may have a cup of coffee together with "Tigrillo" (smashed boiled unripe banana and scrambled with fried eggs and cheese). You can also taste "Molloco" (smashed boiled unripe banana with peanut cream). |
A variety of corn tamales "Humitas", "Quimbolitos", and "Tamales"; soups "Repe" and "Sancocho"; apetizers "Empanadas" and "Bocadilos"; entrees "Rebosados"(fried ripe banana with cheese and scrambled eggs); a wide variety of stuffed rice "Arroz-mote con queso" "Arroz con pollo" and desserts "Torta helada" "Pastel de Zanahoria", etc. are among the exquisities offered by this city. TOURISM: The Central Park is surrounded by unique wooden houses, the neo-classical Main Cathedral and the Municipal Museum, containing a collection of minery tools, archeological and historical objects, epoch photography, etc. Since the Gold Rush, minery has brought wealth to this city. You can visit some of the mines or decide to spend the afternoon in one of the different fresh-water spas or mecicinal thermal waters along the nearby rivers. Trekking is also available. From Guanazán, you can hike up to the bleak plateau and climb "Cerro de Arcos" (Arches Hill/3.600 m a.s.l.). Its summit is crowned by moon-like rocky structures and an enimagmatic lagoon. |
