Author - Rodah Namwalizi Lester
Rodah Namwalizi Lester, a Zambian by birth she was raised in the northern province and studied in Zambia and Tanzania. After secondary school she worked as a photographer, as a machine operator and guesthouse manager in Mansa Batteries until she joined the Luapula Cooperative Union. Following some years of managing the Cooperative restaurant she moved to Canada where she raised her 3 boys and studied accounting.

She returned to Africa with her family in 1989 where she began to work with the rural women of Nampula Province in Mozambique. Here the development of recipes using cassava and training began in earnest, in fact this lead to the founding of the Rural Womens Association. The work was extended to more groups of women in the more remote Lake District of Niassa Province in northwestern Mozambique after the birth of her only daughter, Namulinda.

During these years Rodah also planted acres of cassava and other crops on her farm in Northern Zambia. More recently Rodah was assisting women in central Inhambane Province where she researched livelihood and gender issues in the wake of the disastrous floods of 1999 and 2000.

Since returning to Canada in 2001 Rodah has been active as a board member of her cooperative and is working on compiling years of experience, documents and photos into a useful study of gender issues for Africa.

Last but not least Rodah has to thank her mother Nachilima who taught her many things including the value of hard work, good food and good spirit. Rodah lost her father in early childhood but his spirit has always inspired her. She thanks God and her father’s spirit for guiding her to work with other people and respect every tradition because she has learned so much in this vocation.
