Introduction to the YYZ Fantasy League

The YYZ Fantasy Hockey League is a hard-core rotisserie NHL fantasy league, started in 1990,  with 15 teams based in St. Louis.  The League was formed on the premise that something exciting and meaningful needs to be done to reduce the boredom associated with the NHL Regular Season.  We also run a less-intense Playoff league.

We meet the weekend before the start of the NHL season and draft a team of 14 players.  10 of those players (6 forwards, 3 defensemen, and 1 goaltending team) are submitted as a "Pro" team at the start of each "Segment", usually a 2 week period of the NHL season.  Remaining players are either on a "Farm" roster or on "Injured Reserve".

During the "Segments", the YYZ teams accumulate points based on the scoring done by their skaters and the goaltenders using a weighted system which allows for multiple points on a single goal and special accomplishments (hat tricks, penalty shots, shutouts, ect.).  There is no head-to-head competition among YYZ teams.  You, as a YYZ team, are competing to accumulate the most points by the end of the season.

If a Pro skater is injured for 1 game, skaters from the team's Farm roster are automatically placed on the Pro roster in the injured player's place until he returns.  Seriously injured players are allowed to be placed on "Injured Reserve" and not counted towards their active roster.

Goaltenders are chosen based on a NHL team.  A YYZ team has the possibility of earning points every game their NHL goaltending team plays in.  There are no injury substitutions for goaltenders.

Trades are allowed after the Entry Draft up to a deadline close to the NHL Trade Deadline, with Commissioner approval.  Players unclaimed after the Entry Draft or during the season  are available through Waiver Drafts after every other Segment.  All trades, waiver transactions, and internal roster moves must be completed before the start of the next Segment. However, teams are always limited to a maximum 14 active players on their combined Pro and Farm rosters at the start of each Segment.  Roster management is a key tool in winning.

After each Segment, NHL stats are sorted by the Commissioner and each YYZ team's Pro roster is compiled to determine their point totals and any injury substitutions needed.  Teams are e-mailed their results, and all team's performances are posted to the Web site.   The top 5 teams are awarded prize money at the end of the NHL regular season.
