Ford began using the CD4E on the 1993
Mondeo. Starting in 1994, Ford began also using the CD4E in the 4
cylinder Probe and the Mazda 626. In 1995, it found itself a new
home next to the 4 cylinder Zetec and 6 cylinder Duratec engines
available in the newly reworked Mondeo, called the Contour &
Mystique, which ran until the 2000 model year. In 1999, when Ford
reintroduced the Mercury Cougar based on the CDW27 platform
(Mondeo/Contour), they carried the CD4E over to it as well. More
recently, with the introduction of the Ford Escape/Mazda Tribute,
the CD4E was once again called into service for the task. This time,
heavily reworked for mid-size SUV's 4x4 needs.
