Episode 1: The Man of the Slashing Sword

The story starts out with a small village traveling on the road when they are attacked by a group of bandits.  For the next several minutes, there are just slaughtering of people in the most gruesome way, so if you can't stand that type of graphic, I suggest you fast forward.  Anyways, it comes down to three women and a boy named Shinta.  The boy watches as his friends try to protect him and get slaughtered by the bandits, one at a time.  The last women, his closest friend, died while telling him to live.

Just when the bandit was about to kill Shinta, the bandit hears his accomplices' die and he turns around to see a man kill three more of his accomplices.  The bandit asks who the man was and the man replied, "You are about to die, so knowing my name is useless to you."  (In the fansub version, he says, "Telling my name to a dead man is pointless."  Big difference, same meaning.  I like fansub more, oh well.)  The bandit gets mad and charges at the man, only to end up becoming three pieces in less than 2 seconds (KEWL!).  The man tells Shinta that he avenged the death of Shinta's friend and to be happy he's alive.  Then he just walks off, leaving the kid there.

The next few minutes, it shows this man walking and talking to himself about how the world has changed and "the smell of blood" is too common and an everyday thing now because everybody is trying to survive.  He then goes on to say that he uses the Hiten-Mitsurugi style but he can not save a single soul, so the least he could do is bury the corpses.  By this time, he has walked back to the place where he killed the bandits.  (So, he basically walked in a big circle)
