Poetry may make us from time to time a little more aware of the deeper, unnamed feelings which form the substratum of our being, to which we rarely penetrate; for our lives are mostly a constant invasion of ourselves. - T. S. Eliot

When power leads man toward arrogance, poetry reminds him of his limitations. When power narrows the area of man's concern, poetry reminds him of the richness and diversity of existence. When power corrupts, poetry cleanses. - President John F. Kennedy

My introduction to poetry was through the work of Elizabeth Barrett Browning. From there, I ventured into the works of Shakespeare and Chaucer, Eliot and Arnold, Wordsworth and Poe. Their ability to describe the indescribable, to explain the unexplainable, to harness the abstraction of feeling and paint an understandable view with words, intrigued me. I began seriously writing poetry several years ago. Although I can never lay claim to the rich and numerous talents of the masters I so love to read,  I am capable of expressing the contents of my hearts, captured in one moment of time, through the assembly of words - poetry.

The following original poem was written in remembrance of someone I lost - someone very close to me. It is protected under the Copyright laws of the United States and may not be reproduced, distributed, or otherwise used without the express written permission of the author.

Haunting Melody

I hear your melody as it's played on the wind
On a dark summer night,
On an abandoned street.
Entranced, I follow.
Searching.
Longing,
For just a glimpse of you.
My mind captures the haunting sounds of our love
As the mist surrounds me.
I'm spellbound just thinking of you.
How many nights have I played this game?
How many times have I travelled this road?
How many more 'til I find you?
I remember
The smell of your hair; the blue of your eyes -
As they danced when you smiled.
I remember so well.
My heart can't accept that you're gone.
And so,
I'll forever hear your melody -
As it's played on the wind,
On a dark summer night,
On an abandoned street.
