25-year-old writes some Shug-ary goodness!

Jenny Han (pronounced "like Han Solo") didn't know, when she took a Writing for Children class at her college, that she would find the inspiration for her first published middle-grade book, Shug, but she did!

Jenny, who grew up in Richmond, Virginia, went to the University of North Carolina before moving to New York City for graduate school. In 2006, she finished her MFA for Writing for Children. Shug, told in first person, is her first book and the story of Annemarie.

Annemarie (called Shug) lives in a small Georgia town. She is starting middle
school, and also starting to notice that she has feelings for her best friend Mark. But Mark thinks of Shug as a friend, and even that feels like it's slipping away. To make things worse, Shug's parents are always fighting (her father's always away on business, and her mom is drinking to cope with not fitting in around town). Shug and her (beautiful and popular) sister thinks that their parents are on the edge of a divorce. And on top of THAT, Shug starts tutoring her nemisis, bad boy Jack.

Shug was published with Simon & Schuster in April 2006, when Jenny was 26. While Jenny has said "never say never" on a sequel to Shug, she doesn't have one planned. Currently Jenny is working on a novel about a country girl named Dale.
Jenny's favorite TV Shows include "Freaks and Geeks", "Buffy the Vampire Slayer", and "Veronica Mars!"

Some of her favorite books include I Capture the Castle, To Kill A Mockingbird, and The Color Purple (whose sisters the sisters in Shug are named after!)

Jenny knows how to ballroom dance and cha cha.

Did you know?: Jenny would love to write for soap operas, or be an ice cream tester. She currently writes full time and is a nanny.
