The Wayne Rifles
13th Mississippi Volunteer Infantry
Company B
American War Between the States Reenactors

1861-1865

The 13th Mississippi infantry was organized at Corinth, Mississippi during May 1861.  It was mustered into Confederate service there on May 23rd.  The unit was quite large, containing slightly less than twelve hundred officers and enlisted men when mustered into service.  The unit was reorganized at Yorktown, Virginia on April 16th, 1862.

This is the essence of what we do.  Whether or not the old veterans live out this dream on some plain of Valhalla is not known, but we of the 13th Mississippi certainly live it out on the fields of Ohio.

Fifteen years after the Civil War had ended, a veteran from South Carolina wrote:
"Who knows but it may be given to us after this life to meet again in the old quarters, to play chess and draughts, to get up soon to answer the morning roll call, to fall in at the tap of the drum for drill and dress parade, and to hastily don our war gear while the monotonous patter of the long roll summons the battle?  Who knows but again the old flags ragged and torn, snapping in the wind, may face each other and flutter, pursuing while the cries of victory fill a summer day?  And after the battle, then the slain and wounded will arise, and all will meet together under two flags, all sound and well, and there will be talking and laughter and cheers and all will say, 'did it not seem real?' Was it not as in the old days?"

How To Get Involved
All that is required to join this unit is an interest, time, and the money to uniform and equip yourself.  For some one to equip them self, the most expensive item is your musket.  Uniforms and gear can be purchased, but certain items can be self made.

Where Do The Battles Take Place?
The answer is anywhere.  Travel is one of the major factors involved with Civil War reenacting.  Battles take place between February and November, and most take place within Ohio, Indiana, Michigan,Pennsylvania and Kentucky.

Where Do I Sleep?
There are two camps on site, one is the authentic camp, white tents etc., or the family camp with caravans and modern tents.
The 13th Mississippi is based mostly on the authentic camp.  If all your family takes part, they don't have to stay on the family camp, they are all welcome on the authentic camp as long as they wear authentic clothing while on camp.

Where Do I Get The Equipment?
There are several sources. "Sutlers" are a ready made source for leather goods, shirts, coats, trousers, etc....  We can help you in finding all of the equipment necessary to build your impression.  If you wish to know more, see our links page or feel free to ask.
