Biking Trails in White Rock

I'm sure there are some other trails in White Rock, but I haven't explored them much yet. There is some interesting riding on the dirt roads that split off from NM 4 on the way to Bandelier.

1. White Rock Rim Trail

Technical difficulty: 3
Physical difficulty: 2
Elevation gain/loss: ? over 3 miles
90% singletrack, 10% doubletrack

Fun trail that snakes along the rim of White Rock canyon. Some technical sections, but mostly pretty flat. Put some tube protectors or goop in your tires before you do this ride - it's got lots of sharp rocks and cactus. Easiest way to locate trail is to park at either the far end of Overlook park (where the RC car track is) and head south, or to park at the dead end of Kimberly street and head northeast.

2. White Rock Potrillo Canyon Trail

Technical difficulty: 3+
Physical difficulty: 2+
Elevation gain/loss: minimal over ~3 miles
100% singletrack (sometimes wide)

Leaving from Potrillo road, trails lead along Potrillo canyon. The best follows the canyon rim (take all possible left turns) west for approximately 2.5 miles before turning into a sandy dirt road. There are some interesting slickrock sections in the middle sections of the trail where it has been cut deeply into the tuff. Riding west, the trail is fairly moderate technically, but there are a few nigh-unrideable climbs when returning to the east. A good ride if the trails in Los Alamos are snowed in. Easiest way to find trailhead is to take Monterey S. to Potrillo to Estante and park on the right near a fire hydrant. Trail heads south from here.
