GUITAR!

2001

Music has always seemed to be part of my life. When I was a kid, my best friends and I got together and made a rock band. I was the drummer for the group. My drums were cardboard boxes and my cymbals were trash can lids. We didn't have much but we had alot of imagination and fun!

My first guitar was an old Spanish guitar my grandfather gave me when I was 13. The bridge was badly damaged and there were only two strings on it (A and D). I would spend hours playing "I'm Not Your Stepping Stone" from the "new" Monkee's TV show. Eventually, I got around to putting the rest of the strings on it. After picking up a chord book, I really started to move! Even now, there seems to always be something new to learn; whether it be different tunings, styles, whatever.

Over the years, I have followed several different artists and learned from their styles of play and their music. Here are what I consider to be my "mentors" in guitar:

The Beatles

The Monkees

Gordon Lightfoot

America

John Denver

Crosby, Stills, & Nash

Neil Young

Luka Bloom

Dave Matthews

All I Need is You

1976, David Smith
Song-scoop:
This is my first song. I wrote this song one evening beside a warm campfire during a solo camping trip to the White Mountains in New Hampshire. Before the trip, I had gone out for the first time with the person who was later to become my wife. I had a really good feeling about that evening and that it might not be the only time we would get together.

I feel so good and warm today, I really don't know why.
The beauty of this mountain stream, the bright sun in my eyes.
But if all these things weren't here with me I know I won't feel blue
'Cause all I ever really need is you.

The beauty of God's lands and seas brings thoughts of you to mind.
I just open up my heart to feel the peace and love I find.
And I know that you're not here with me and still I don't feel blue
'Cause all I ever really need is you.

When the night has come to steal the day and darkness fills the sky.
When my senses feel the coldness and clouds begin to cry.
All these things I love are gone from me and still I don't feel blue
'Cause all I ever really need is you.

In my dreams I know,

That all I ever really need is you.

Another Nail in the Cross

2001, David Smith
Song-scoop:
A general "pissed-off" song. Just upset that we, as one of the many species of animals on the planet, seem so pious about our own view of things that we never stop to show any care for different ways of thinking, people in need, or our environment.

Churches, temples, mosques on the land
Sometimes as humans we can't understand.
They all come before me, each their own way.
It's not up to you to decide who can stay.
Slamming the door in the face of my own;
Just like the slap from a time long ago

Chorus ~
Look now, listen, hear my plea,
"What you do to the least of these you do to me"
Pick up the hammer; bring it on down,
lift me to heaven high off the ground.
You have to consider the loss,
when you drive another nail in the cross.

Paper, plastic, silver and gold,
Sometimes as humans we can be so cold.
Homeless and hungry in this world abound,
but pieces of silver make such a nice sound.
Denial is easy but what will you do,
when the sun is arisin' and the bird sings for you.

Chorus ~

Bridge ~
We can turn this around somehow,
but we have to do it right now.
We have come to the end of the line,
I just pray that there is still time.

Progress and greed, it poisons the air.
Sometimes as humans we don't seem to care.
Rip up the earth, let the trees burn,
Leave some for others, that's not our concern.
The wonders God gave to the human race,
Will be just a memory in the darkness of space.

Chorus

Bring My Love Back Home

2001, David Smith
Song-scoop:
Woke up one morning with visions of a 19th century woman standing by the ocean; her hair and gown blown back by the wind; crying out to a very angry sea. Wrote down the words as fast as they came. Wierd!

Wedding band.
Sitting on the nightstand.
Missing the hands
that hold her so closely.

Morning sun.
Children running, having fun.
For her another day has begun.
Will they see their daddy again?

Chorus ~
Day by day it's been this way.
The only life he's ever known.
But every night she quietly prays,
"Lord shine your light; bring my love back home".

Busy pier.
Wondering if the day is near.
Or the one she's always feared.
"Will he be back by my side?"

People talk.
They say, all hope is lost.
No matter what the cost.
They'll keep searching 'til they find something.

Chorus ~

Bridge ~
For all the times she's said goodbye.
For all the tears she's had to cry.
Ask her of doubt she'll say "never".
They will be together forever and ever and ever and ever.

Gentle rain.
Washes away her pain.
On the dock she remains.
Hoping for a miracle.

Angry sea.
She cries out so desperately.
Reaching out to where he should be.
How can she go on?

Chorus ~

Can We Talk?

2001, David Smith
Song-scoop:
Each year, I organize a beach cleanup. I think that it is a disgrace how we use the ocean as a cesspool. It is time we wake up and realize that our very existance depends on the sea and what it can give us only if we treat it with respect.

Please come sit beside me, and turn a tender ear.
I really must confide in you my deepest, darkest fear.
My time is quickly running, listen to my plea.
I cannot give what I do not have; it's like you just don't see.

Chorus ~
Can we talk, lover, can we talk?
Think we have to open up, try and clear the air.
Can we talk, honey, can we talk?
We need to find that long lost time,
When you were truly mine.

All your new friends tell you, take what you can get.
Comes the day, when you will say, there's not enough regret.
Everything I've given is wasted on the wind.
Somehow you have to realize that more is really sin.

Chorus

Only you can save us, only you my love.
Can't you see what you do to me cries to God above.
Every time I hold you in the waters of my life.
And cry out to the heavens, cry out from the shore.
To look inside yourself and find, the heart you had before.

Chorus

Changes

2001, David Smith
Song-scoop:
This is a sequel to my first song. I was standing on a beach in Miami and noticed the ocean, which constantly changes, playing against the land, which also changes only more slowly. Between these two, I noticed a couple, who had obviously been together for a very long time, walking hand-in-hand. Made me reflect on my own marriage of over 20 years.

Time, was never the same
Since the day we shared a name.
We have grown together as one
and life's just begun.

Chorus ~
Changes, they come and they go.
Changes, I just need to know
That you'll be the one.

Hearts, can go their own way.
In your love, mine never will never stray.
It's not clear, what the future may bring,
but I wear your ring.

Chorus ~

Bridge ~
Sand and sea, wind and rain
Everything's different; nothing's the same.
In your eyes, I have found
a love that's built on solid ground.
Steady and sure like stars in the night
I hold you close; it just feels so right.

Dreams, made real as we pray.
Reach out, hold fast to the day.
Take my hand, I know when you're near.
I've nothing to fear.

Changes, they come and they go.
Changes, I want you to know
That you are the one,
that you are the one,
you know you're the one.

Into Your Mind

2001, David Smith
Song-scoop:
Sitting in Ft. Lauderdale Airport one day waiting for a flight back home, I noticed that EVERYBODY was listening to SOMETHING; a phone (some people were even "chained" to the wall), a walkman, whatever. Made me sad to think that God cann't talk to these people if their lines lines of communication are always so busy!

Day and night you're on the telephone
Searching for the answers to questions unknown.
The grace you desire can never come in
if your head is covered with plastic and tin.

Chorus ~
So open up the passage, clear out the way.
Cleanse your soul for a brand new day.
Listen to the wind; it's not hard to find.
Just open the door ~ let Him into your mind.

Staring at the people behind the screen.
Walking away, feeling so unclean.
How can I tell what is real and what's not.
when my eyes are filled with this garbage that rots?

Chorus ~

Bridge ~
There was a time when we didn't have to try so hard
To bring the saving words into our hearts
But living for today does not come without a price.
Why did we turn away and drift so very far apart?

Calm the madness racing through your head.
Unkind words are better left unsaid.
Chase out the demons that have taken your life.
End all the battles, quiet the strife.

Chorus ~

Into your mind...
Into your mind...
Into your mind

Let Me Show You

2001, David Smith
Song-scoop:
While it should be pretty obvious why I wrote this song, a couple of interesting points. Parrotfish have very hard mouths that will crush the coral it is feeding on. The sound is similar to sticking your head into a bowl of a "famous" cereal after you pour milk on it. At night, there are tiny single-cell creatures that make the water sparkle when you move your hand through it. Like a Forth of July sparkler. An incredible sight!

Strap on your mask, turn on your air.
Splash into the silent world, swim without a care.
Bubbles racing to the top, break into the day.
Slowly your mind gets drawn away.

Chorus ~
Let me show you, the beauty of the ocean.
Let me show you, the life beneath the sea.
Let me show you, the wonders of the water.
Let me show you a better way to be free.

Swim along a sunken wreck, that's seen a better time.
Look beneath the sand and shells for treasures you may find.
Hang out with some parrot fish, munching on the reef
Your head is filled with sounds beyond belief.

Chorus ~

Bridge ~
Colors painted all around, more than you can see.
Sharks and turtles, seals and man, happy as can be.
Passing over coral and rock, back along the years.
All your troubles drift away, there's nothing you can fear.

Later when the sun goes down, when stars are in the sky.
Squids will come out to the dark and dance before your eyes.
Wave your hand into the night, watch the sparkles glow.
Feel the ocean's love inside you grow.

Chorus ~

Return to Dust

2001, David Smith
Song-scoop:
My tribute song for 9.11.01. Wrote the guitar lick during a camping trip to Maine. Wrote the words after reading a newspaper article. See my 9.11 Page for more.

Sun was coming up over the city by the sea.
People going about their life, just like you, just like me.
In the time it takes to steal a kiss and say goodbye.
The joyful song of autumn had died.

Chorus ~
He has taken back their spirits to be with the one we trust
Mortar and man return to dust ~ pray for us.

Drifting through the streets of town into the shops and stores.
Lying on the coats and caps, resting softly on the floor.
Manna from heaven falling making not a sound.
Broken dreams lie scattered on the ground.

Chorus ~

The sun was setting low over the city by the sea.
In a quiet place upon the dust a seed had come to be.
Watered by the tears of many, a tiny flower grows.
New life from the passing of the old.

Chorus ~

Tribute to a Thunderstorm

2002, David Smith
Song-scoop:
There is a screened-in porch on the back of our house. During the summer, I will sit out and watch the thunderstorms roll in from the west. There is an incredible about of energy and life in a thunderstorm. Almost as if God Himself is paying a little visit. Then, it passes over the house on to the sea about 10 miles away.

Hear the thunder far off beyond the trees.
Earthly spirits riding upon the breeze.
All my senses welcome the coming storm.
Flash of lightning and sound
from the sky to the ground
while I watch all around.

Stay here now, oh no don't you run inside.
Funny but some people will even cry.
Flashing lights that dance on a summer's night.
Never cause you despair.
Don't you know nature cares.
Feel the life in the air.

Majestic floating pillars of wind and rain
Chase away my troubles and ease my pain.
In a moment, all have become renewed.
Then it rides to the sea
Please don't go far from me.
When it comes back you'll see………
me waiting here again…
waiting for my friend...
I'll watch for you again.

Under the Tree

2001, David Smith
Song-scoop:
A nice "feel good" song I wrote after a series of lunchtime walks through a patch of woods near where I work.

Don't let your troubles get you down.
Get your feet back on the ground.
Sweep away the worries that make you frown.
Precious time is all around
for gazing through the branches up at the sky.

Under the tree...
You can become whole again
Sit back and take all of it in.
Let your mind drift off above the clouds.

Take my hand, my dear, let's run away.
We can go outside and play.
Bring along the picnic lunch you made.
Sip some wine under the shade.
Sharing tender kisses beneath the leaves.

Under the tree...
I will pledge all of my love.
Our joy will reach to the stars above.
What will it take to say you'll be mine?

Winter's cold, summer bids us adieu.
Warm and mellow days are few.
Red, orange, and yellow cover the blue.
This show is all put on for you.
Shadows run forever along the ground.

Under the tree...
Life will come back in majesty.
Birds sing, happy and carefree.
And we'll be together once more.

You and Me

(Song for Terri & Mike, 1/27/02)

2001, David Smith
Song-scoop:
A song to commemorate the wedding of two very special people!

Walk along this path with me, today we will be one.
Leave our separate lives behind, a new day has begun.
My heart is filled with joyful song to know that you'll be mine.
And know that I'll be there for you until the end of time.

Chorus ~
You and me...
together from the start
What God has joined with love and kindness shall never be apart.
As the days grow into years, it will be clear to see.
that we were meant to share this journey; it is our destiny,
....you and me.

In the springtime of our life, we come from far away.
To share our hopes and dreams as one, to laugh and love and play.
The wonders of the morning light, the beauty that it brings.
Is why I say to you, my dear, "I wed thee with this ring".

Chorus ~

Bridge ~
There will be times we do not understand.
Angry words are spoken and things get out of hand
Reach beyond the tears and sadness, close your eyes and feel.
The trust that keeps us close together; the power of love that heals.

Drifting through the seasons; twilight growing near,
Looking back across the memories, laughing at the years
It all has seemed so special and I'd do it all again.
It feels so good to know you are my life, my love my friend.

Chorus ~

...and in those times of doubt, oh Lord, please help us both to see;
it's you and me.
