The Great Sungai Long Trail

02nd July 2000

At the first steep downhill.Today's gathering was in Bangsar, Devi's corner at 08:00am with roti canai and coffee for breakfast. Turning up one by one, soon everybody was here and ready to leave for our destination - Sungai Long.

We started off with 22 riders but in less than 5 minutes, one dropped off! Roslan's friend decided that she just could not ride such off-road trail at all! Incidentally, this is her third ride and her very first time experiencing riding in the real rugged terrain! After another 30 minutes, this time, Roslan himself disappeared! Can't blame him, but I know he would have loved to complete what Simon and his 'boys' had in store for us . It is also a big waste as I was expecting some nice crashes and Yu Jin's Crash sequence!bloody photographs since Roslan's nickname speaks for himself: The Fall Guy!

The ride started off with us riding up this short but really steep hill - not one but two hills! Just when the top is reached, we had to turn back for the downhill ride! What a big blow to those who were already struggling to ride up these 2 hills! As Simon said, this was just a warming up hill!

Soon, we were riding through the usual trail, through thick undergrowth and branches lying on the ground. When we reached the usual 'extra' steep downhill, apart from Kor Yong, the boys from Sungai Long displayed their daring skill by riding down this steep hill. Yu Jin from Sungai Long was not so lucky as he hit a tree stump at the bottom of the hill and somersaulted into the thick growth below! But it was a What a long snake!real daring and perfect skill if not for the mishap.

The original plan was to ride this new trail nicknamed, 'Love Trail'. Unfortunately, after the river crossing, Kiat was already charging ahead shouting 'leeches'! Some of the riders automatically followed along and obviously did not hear my shouting to them to stop! They had instead gone straight out into the housing estate and missed the turn-off point.

Not only have they missed this left turn for the 'Love Trail', they also missed a spectacular sight. While waiting for them to back track, some of us managed to have a 'live' view of a green snake on a tree. Initially we thought it was just a small snake but when it started to stretch out, we realized that this is no 'baby' snake. I think it The dead man's drop off!must have been more than a meter long! The strange thing about this snake is that despite its overall green color, it had a brown tail of about at least a foot long! Soon 'expert' opinions were heard from some of the riders: 'bamboo snake … poisonous or not. No-lah …' One smart fella' even suggested climbing up the tree and taking a shot of the snake together!

To end today's ride, we were taken to the race track which Simon and his 'boys' have prepared very nicely and professionally, waiting for us. Simon and his boys have done a great job getting this fantastic mountain biking trail ready. The path is very narrow mostly with plenty of very sharp bends. Not to mention those threatening mini drop-offs, which I happened to have a first hand feel on one, no thanks to 'Coke'!

I was coming downhill very fast in one of these sharp corners and there she was, Coke was stopped dead track in my path! Another daring feat!A sudden jab at my rear brakes did not help to stop my bike, which went straight into hers! The next thing I know, I was down on the ground with my face next to her butt! Now I really wish some one will come up with the invention of ABS brakes for mountain bikes!

Overall, a very narrow trail but undoubtedly one of the better trails, which we have, rode and tested. The distance may be too short but the technicality involved here is worth the short distance. Finally we all ended up at the grand finale - a steep drop off of over 10 feet in height! Most of us just froze when we reached this dead-end! Only the few daredevils went for it! And our new member-rider, Kingsley took up enough courage (after much hesitation) to prove to us that he is a true mountain biker by taking on this dead-man's cliff! What a show! The man himself: Simon performing the dare-devil jump off!A true Aussie lad with a young and daring heart who also took a tumble at the end of the drop off!

And to Simon and all his 'boys' from Sungai Long, a very BIG thank you to all for a very wonderful and enjoyable ride. With such strong co-operation and commitment, every one of you will always make mountain biking in Sungai Long more enjoyable.

As if not enough, the majority have agreed on another ride here come next week! And two trails will be in: The Love trail and the Busy Body trail! Now is this not enough to make you want to come join in the fun? What more when we have this 'dead-man's Cliff' for you to prove your daredevil skill?
