This is still a tamban hotspot despite all the jigging done everyday. From observations, on a good day of tamban jigging, the whole lot of people jigging for the tamban could get up to 20-30kg of the baitfish altogether. This source of baitfish provides food for the big predators like the queenfish, spanish mackeral and big trevallies which can be seen being landed at the jetty ocassionally. Lots of good sized groupers are hiding under the jetty itself. Although many people have written off this place, I still think it could provide some good catches given the right technique and bait presentation. It could be the starting ground for new fishos who wishes to learn fishing on a demonstration basis.
Bedok Jetty is an easily-accessible place, with amenities like food centres and washrooms nearby. The only drawback is the lack of shelter on the jetty itself. Bring along collaspsible tents for some cover against the hot afternoon sun. For those who are driving, the nearest carpart is F1.
- Jurong Island
This place does not produce as good catches as before, due the water becoming very much polluted from the chemical industries on the island. Fishing at the bridge is prone to getting sangoat. I have lost more than 10 sinkers on a single trip alone. Fishing at the jetties on the island is not advisable as the water is blocked off from the open sea by breakwaters. There is little surface action and what I personally tried and also witnessed is that at the end of a frustrating day, one will go back home with the 100g of live prawns that he has brought to the spot, without a single bite. The only viable spot is the stretch of breakwaters at the far end of the island, facing the open sea. I personally saw people raising fish every 5 minutes! Snappers and groupers, with the occasional trevally are common catches. A word of caution though, the breakwaters are very slippery with lots of algae clinging to them and it is foolish to try to clamber down to retrieve a cheap sinker.
After 911, the public was denied access to the island for security reasons. However, it seems that this is not the case anymore. I will check out the place soon and post an update.
Dec
2003: If you are an employee on this island, chances are that you might be
able to wet a line, but the gereral public are not allowed to fish on the
island, nor in surrounding waters.
Before Changi Naval Base itself was built, this patch of reclaimed land produced many spectacular catches. After the completion of the naval base, the only place where anglers are allowed to cast their lines is the patch of seawall shown in the picture above. Good tablefare is frequently landed here.
