Rigging Live Prawns

A very common question has often been asked, that is, the correct way to hook a live prawn. I've learnt of some methods, but I've stuck to one method most of the time, which is described in the picture below. I've found that using this method, live prawns can still be cast out a reasonable distance, without it being flung off the hook.

Rigging Up a Baitfish Using Wire Trace

Very often, it is hard to rig up baits like Tamban using a hook tied to a wire trace compared to doing the same for a squid. As such, anglers have came up with the baiting needle, which ensures that the bait stays in place during a powerful cast during surf fishing. The following captioned pictures show one how to use a baiting needle to good effect.

When expecting toothy critters like Barracudas and Mackerels, it is wise to change the terminal tackle to one that uses wire traces to avoid losing rigs (and fishes!). I use wire traces with some of my surf fishing rigs, of which the Bedok Jetty Paternoster Rig is one of them.

Well, I hope that this short write-up is useful to fellow anglers, especially those who are venturing into the realm of surf fishing. Cheers!
